The Undiscovered Asian Capital
Capital of the Republic of China (commonly known as Taiwan), huge Taipei is surrounded by mountains. Taipei 101, once the world’s tallest building, dominates its skyline from Xinyi, an area known for the most active nightlife.
At Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall the national flag is raised every morning and the guard changed every hour. Less known for tourists is National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, containing a tall bronze statue of the country’s founding father.
Of the wealth of Taipei museums, the best are Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines and the National Palace Museum – one of world’s largest collections of Chinese artifacts. Even more numerous are the temples dedicated to Buddhist, Taoist and Chinese folk religions. Xinsheng South Road is nicknamed ‘Road to Heaven’ for its sheer number, but most famous is Longshan Temple in Wanhua, the oldest district.
Taipei shopping is fantastic and includes Core Pacific Living Mall, supposedly Asia’s largest. The Ximending area has lots of shops (and karaoke), while the Shilin Night Market should not be missed. For a break from the bustle head to central Daan Forest Park, the botanical gardens with its lotus ponds,or Yangmingshan National Park, known for hot spring baths and spring cherry blossom.

Taipei is such a vibrant cool city, rated the 3rd safest city in the world and it feels it too. Taxis are cheap and abundant, and the MRT runs like clockwork. You're never far away from a convinience store and the people of taiwan are always happy to help. We were so impressed by the amount of english (and japanese!!) everywhere we went. That being said, a few things to make your life easier - apply mosquito repellent! they come out at dusk and will feast on your foreigner blood with gusto. - make sure your room as A/C if you are visiting in the summer. It was basically 35c everyday we were there for two weeks in July, and I have never sweated so much in my life. Some weather apps likened the 'real feel' temperature to be 45c. - make sure you have cash! apple pay and credit cards are widely accepted but cash is still king. Cathay bank atm do not have foreign transacton fees!

This is my 2nd time.
This is my 2nd time. First was 2018, i noticed that food, clothes and ofher items got expensive now. Also, govt should do something abt the many homeless people staying esp at nighttime @Taipei Main Station. It leaves a bad sight since it is a central location for transportation both of locals and foreign travellers..the homeless are scattered all over the place making the area their sleeping quarters, awful & disappointing to see.

In our situation -- this was our second time vacationing in Taipei. One of us is American and one of us is a native Taiwanese currently living in the United States. We love Taipei. The public transit makes it so easy to get around. There are countless food and drink options and most of the food is wildly cheap. It feels like there's stuff to do everywhere. Cards for public transit can be found in 7-11 or Family Mart and you can load money onto them in any MRT Station kiosk. Ximen is my favorite area -- I love how many shops and food options there are and how bustling the streets are. There's so many people walking around but everyone is kind and respectful. I love cocktail bars -- Lab and WAT Bar were our favorites during this visit. Taiwan's night markets are also legendary -- so many food options packed into a busy market and all of it is cheap -- however some of the night markets get very crowded so it can be hard to move around in them. If you're looking for Asian Beauty products check out Watsons (most are open 24 hours), Cosmed and Poya. Aside from the standard MRT -- the High Speed Rail makes it easy to go beyond Taipei and visit other parts of Taiwan efficiently. In two hours you can be on the other side of the country via the HSR.
