We discovered Coloma by accident searching for a quick getaway for the 4th of July. We found the Bella Vista Bed and Breakfast and could not have been more pleasantly surprised. The Bella Vista was fantastic, but Coloma was also a really lovely spot for a few days. The South Fork of the American River flows through there and the scenery is gorgeous. The Marshall Gold Discovery Museum Park is there - it is where the first gold was discovered in 1848 and the history is fascinating. There are hiking trails and lots of little towns in the area. Placerville is nearby if you need a bigger town, but Lotus, Cool, Georgetown and Garden Valley are charming towns around there. We ate at Squally's for great BBQ ribs, the yogurt shop had an incredible mixed fruit sorbet, the Café next door sold us a small but decadent chocolate ganache cake (gluten-free) and the Mexican food inside the general store was fresh and yummy. I highly recommend this for a great getaway.
