You have to take the Durango-Silverton steam train.
You have to take the Durango-Silverton steam train. Have to soak in one of the hot springs - we did not have enough time. There are nice trails around. We did not have enough time. Downtown is pretty, walkable with nice restaurants.

There so much to do .
There so much to do . The Downtown is nice fun to walk around see the history , Lots of hiking walking areas . It close to Million dollar highway Silverton and Ouay. Many guided tours rafting biking etc

Durango is hands down the best city in Colorado.
Durango is hands down the best city in Colorado. Beautiful, charming, artsy. It has history and a unique character, and isn't overrun with people in athletic leisurewear trying to look rich. And it's got a Single-Gage Railroad, which is the BEST way to see the Rockies. We visit as often as we can (from NY).

Durango is an interesting place to live, work and play. The homeless problem is a serious concern that the city should address as soon as they can. Finding may be an issue but there should be more people assigned to this project.

Beautiful small city.
Beautiful small city. Well maintained with a variety of restaurants and small very interesting shops all along the side streets. The Durango-Silverton rail road was a major plus. The RR travels through the San Juan National Forest inaccessible to anyone not hiking there. Gorgeous landscapes and mountains with a stop in an old mining town, Silverton.
There is rafting and lots of hiking along with a miles long trail along the Animus river. It is near Mesa Verde, about 40 minutes away. Weather when we were there in late May was comfortable: 70's during the day and 40's during the night.

The big draw of Durango is the steam train ride.
The big draw of Durango is the steam train ride. It was OK, but if you're taller than 5'6" the seating will be very uncomfortable.
The town itself is a tourist trap. Restaurants are average, prices high, and service poor. They know you came for the train, and won't be back.
Colorado is a beautiful state, but there are better choices there.

John is exceptionally available and concerned that everything is just right. I needed inexpensive lodging on a weekend every other hotel was tripling their price. Budget Inn was the best value.
