I am very familiar with Meriden because I lived in Waterbury for 30 years. Moved to New Hampshire in Sept. 2019 and came back to visit son and celebrate our birthdays. Saw some old friends and visited recently departed husband's grave, but I did leave one day early because of canceled plans. Didn't do much around Meriden but it was close to where I was visiting friends.
The cost for the accommodations were very reasonable. Housekeeping staff provided good service and were hospitable. When the boiler caused the smoke alarm to go off and there was no water, the manger provided a free night for the inconvenience, much to relief!
I booked this room thinking it would be Wyndham quality. It was not. I do not blame the desk clerk - this is all about management. Clerk was efficient and calm, given he was there by himself and a check-in line had formed. I waited 25 mins to be checked in. There should have been another clerk. Simple vacuuming was missing, elevator rug was filthy, remains of spill on a white entrance floor, leaves and debris inside door entrance, overflowing outdoor trash cans. No snacks in kitchen - soup had emptied and container crusting over. My room was okay, but not worth $92 - ceiling water stain with hanging wallpaper, huge corner holes in mattress pad, bath drain would not open, wall nicks and stains. Small TV was far away from my bed making it difficult to see. Lamp shades bent. Definitely not 3 stars. Manager should be pitching in if hiring falls short. To be fair - kitchen was clean, microwave new, well maintained. Air conditioning good. Bed was comfortable. Nice art work, new curtains. Morning clerk cheerful. Local restaurants plentiful.
The weather was nice. There was a limited amount of restaurants and the one non chain restaurant we tried was a Japanese place had good sushi but horrible hibachi which they cooked in the back and not on the grill(their request).
Coming to Red Roof in Meriden CT was a terrible experience from the start. Coming into the parking lot, our first view was a cementary right next to it. Walking through the door being treated by a very nice woman, she was the best part of the stay. Then to getting into an elevator which is completely sketchy, we ended up getting stuck on our way out, and having to manually open the door. When trying to speak to someone at the front there was nobody there. The next morning we all woke with a lack of sleep, due to itchy beds. Excited for our “free breakfast”, we got to the lobby to see that the only thing they had were three bagels, apple juice, and coffee. We ended up eating McDonald’s, and wasting extra money on something that should of been provided. This is ultimately the worst stay I’ve ever had, and will never visit a red roof again.
Was there visiting family. Hotel was great would recommend to anyone traveling to Meriden. Definitely need to eat at Lidos close by the hotel, Teds Restaurant, Little Rendevous, Pepe’s Pizza in New Haven and The USS Chowder Pot in Branford to name a few. Also went to Sky Zone and On Track Karting in Wallingford great for kids! Quick train ride to New York City also.
