Also known as Timor-Leste, this Southeast Asian nation is made up on the eastern and northwest sections of Timor island. Home to jungle caves, coral reef and mountaintop markets, this is one for the explorer in you. Thanks to a wonderfully varied landscape, East Timor a prime spot for adventurous activities like hiking and diving. Some of the best trekking routes can be found at Mount Ramelau, Ainaro and Mount Matebian, where you’ll likely encounter some of the 260 bird species on the island. Nino Konis National Park also promises stunning hiking paths as well as prehistoric archaeological sites. Located at the base of the Coral Triangle, East Timor offers some of the best scuba diving sites in the world. Some of the best spots include Dili and Atauro Island, where you’ll encounter a unfathomable number of fish and coral. Markets are found in every main town on the island and offer a great way to soak up the local culture and customs. Walk along Dili waterfront and you’ll discover lots of fruit stalls selling fresh papayas, mangoes and bananas. Most accommodation is located in the capital city of Dili, with a choice of hotels, hostels and apartments. There are a few limited options outside of Dili in Beloi and Liquica.
