Also known as Timor-Leste, this Southeast Asian nation is made up on the eastern and northwest sections of Timor island. Home to jungle caves, coral reef and mountaintop markets, this is one for the explorer in you. Thanks to a wonderfully varied landscape, East Timor a prime spot for adventurous activities like hiking and diving. Some of the best trekking routes can be found at Mount Ramelau, Ainaro and Mount Matebian, where you’ll likely encounter some of the 260 bird species on the island. Located at the base of the Coral Triangle, East Timor offers some of the best scuba diving sites in the world. Markets are found in every main town on the island and offer a great way to soak up the local culture and customs. Walk along Dili waterfront and you’ll discover lots of fruit stalls selling fresh papayas, mangoes and bananas. Most accommodation is located in the capital city of Dili, with a choice of hotels, hostels and apartments. There are a few limited options outside of Dili in Beloi and Liquica.

Balibo Fort Hotel is a truly unique travel experience, the quality of stay was like nothing else we experienced in Timor Leste. The rooms themselves are modern, very clean and wonderfully decorated, whilst being surrounded by elements of the fort. The pool was an absolute highlight, with wonderful views of the local mountain ranges. The food was excellent, and there is a huge breakfast. The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, it was so lovely to see so many young people getting experience in hospitality.
The hotel is in very close proximity to the Australian Flag House/Museum, and there is a wonderfully kept museum onsite at the entrance gateway, with a broader focus on Timor Leste's history.

The fresh bread at breakfast was delicious and the restaurant's dinner service is incredible. Probably the best in Dili. The staff was very accommodating and spontaneously arranged tours for us. We felt very safe at this hotel.

Great to see vegan options on the menu and plant based milks for breakfast. The location was perfect, central to everything with great views from the restaurant looking out to the ocean. Beautiful tropical setting around the pool and a very friendly staff member “Josh”.

Great location, theirs a shopping centre below with about 20 shops. Four small supermarkets and a dozen food places. The rice and bowl is the perfect place for a morning coffee, maybe the best coffee I have ever had.
The rooms are fine and the staff are great, always will to help with anything. Very clean and large rooms.
