Perhaps one of the big questions when going for leisure to Kyoto is to decide where to stay-- in the heart of the city, a bit outside of the busiest area, or much further out out. We decided to try a few nights in the heart of the city and a few nights here, a bit outside (near a JR train station and in a very safe, traditional Japanese neighborhood). We didn't go wrong, and we were very pleased with this neighborhood and house.
Upon making the reservation, we were sent instructions with a map / turn by turn photos of how to get to the house. I took a taxi and others in the group took the train instructions since we were arriving at different times. It's probably better to follow the directions because the taxi driver, if arriving to Kyoto station, didn't really know how to get exactly to the house, only to the general location.
The check in process was great, they had a binder with instructions and the person that checked us in explained how to use everything -- and the house has everything you could need, including a small patio / garden, amazing bath area looking out to the (small but well designed) garden, kitchen area, washing machine with dryer, living area with tatami floors and 2 rooms upstairs with tatami floors and Japanese beds, entry area to remove shoes, and passage area with computer and printer.
Finally, the neighborhood -- hopefully you can figure out a few words in Japanese because if you like off the tourist track, this neighborhood has some great small restaurants with excellent food. There are bigger, more "commercial" restaurants on the main road where the train station is, but if you walk through the neighborhood, you'll find so many izakayas or specialty restaurants.»
