  „We have been holidaying in villas for the past 17 years and this villa is certainly one of the best! A private, spacious and very well equipped house in a in a quiet, clean and pleasant residential area. Although surrounded by other houses, the villa has a wonderful garden and is totally secluded whilst having great views. We loved that we could sleep with open windows, it was very quiet, no car or music noise. The house was tip top clean, the equipment and furniture is outstanding. The beds were comfortable with memory foam toppers. Lots of linen and toiletries, candles, matches, BBQ firelighters - everything was there. The caretakers - two lovely ladies - very friendly and helpful. Down the hill in walking distance is a lift to a beautiful pebbled beach, where the daily hire of sun loungers and umbrellas is very reasonable - fantastic snorkeling and diving there. In walking distance are some restaurants and grocery shops. Like most properties on Madeira this house is built over several levels and there are stairs in the house and in the garden. I would think that children should be of an age where they can climb stairs safely unaided. For us, with teenage children it was perfect.“

  „We booked 'Apartamento raio de sol' which we thought was in Canico town centre a few minutes walk to Quinta Splendida resort - which we needed to be close by for our friends wedding however it wasn't as it seemed. We spent a long time looking for the apartment going by the map provided on booking.com and google maps (also searching by the name of apartment) which we found is incorrectly advertised as 'Apartamento Raio de Sol' We walked around in a torrential rain storm and the owner of the apartment came looking for us. Once we arrived completely soaked cold and not on holiday mode , we saw where the mistake had happened. This apartment is called 'Marina do sol' which doesn't even show up on any of the maps. The apartment we stayed in is a 20 minute and (not 2 as we had intented ) walk up a rather steep hill to Cancio town centre, but close and short walk to the beach. The apartment is a good size and ,The balcony is great and offers amazing views. The shower was in need of a scrub not dirty but the grout around the tiles needed cleaning and off putting. The pressure was non existent so we had a bath with the shower hose (not quite a shower).“

The balcony was nice for sitting but as usual there was quite a breeze at Canico so only when the direction of the wind changed was it warm enough to sit out for long. Canico is just hotels and holiday apartments and a few houses so there is little community feel to the place, although there are enough locals to establish the required noise from barking dogs to make the Portuguese feel at home! We enjoyed being able to walk to Spar for our bread rolls. The main thing about the resort is that you are near the motorway which will take you to some of the best walks on this planet. The levada walks and the walk to the highest peak were just amazing. Just one of these walks would have made this holiday memorable. Our favourites were the highest peak and the walk to the most easterly point of the Island. A hire car is best as if you don't mind driving, their excellent road system will enable you to drive almost everywhere through tunnels and on motorways that are well maintained. You can also book trips from travel agents in the town if you prefer other people's company and would like someone else to organise your life for you.“

Just opposite the house is a bus station to Funchal. This is the last station for bus and you always will get a place to sit in the bus.
