Located just a 1-minute walk from popular Miyagawa Morning Market in the heart of Takayama, Sumiyoshi Ryokan offers homely Japanese-style accommodation in the historic townhouse building. Room was comfortable, entire property was spotless, staff were welcoming and kind. Food was incredible!

Boasting open-air hot spring baths looking over the city and heartfelt hospitality, Honjin Hiranoya Annex is ideally located just steps away from popular Takayama Jinya building and its morning... Loved the whole time spent in this hotel. Everthing was amazing, from the food, the hotel itself, the king people working there, the baths..., thank you for an amazing experience in a lovely place!

Situated at the heart of historic Takayama Old Town and just steps away from Takayama Jinya Morning Market, the traditional Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan offers personalised hospitality, hot spring baths... We visited here one night only, but were blown away by the quality of the food and the exceptional service. The staff were all kind and made our honeymoon feel that much more special, including taking photos for us (which they gave framed to us later!) and a surprising gift as well. They fed us so much delicious food during breakfast and dinner as well, and we enjoyed every bite. I've been the numerous ryokans before, but this experience was truly a cut above. Would gladly go back given a chance, and loved the convenient location as well to explore Takayama. Can't recommend enough!

The building itself, as you can see from the pictures, is exquisite. If you are a fan of architecture or traditional craftsmanship, you will delight at just BEING in Taniya. This was almost a problem—I'm used to thinking of a hotel as a "crash pad" while exploring, and instead I wanted to spend hours and hours inside! Each morning was calm and peaceful: make a cup of green tea, then observe the way the light plays through the washi, the sound of water rushing by. I also particularly loved the bath; one of my favorite memories was enjoying it on a rainy, chilly night. We got home from dinner, I used the auto-fill function while I got ready for bed, then opened the window onto the courtyard and stepped in. Watching the moon through the rain, maple leaves, and steam curling up from the bath... it's like having your own personal onsen. Plus, each item in the villa was thoughtfully chosen, from the local sakes on offer in the fridge to the items provided in the bathroom to the super-soft pajamas. Even better were our hosts, who exemplified the Japanese concept of "omotenashi" (essentially, "hospitality" taken to its highest level). Well before arrival we were working with the Taniya concierge to make our plans happen (many thanks to Mahiro!). She handled making reservations at our desired restaurants and travel around town was provided as needed. Where she truly excelled was helping us troubleshoot our more ambitious ideas, such as: is there an open-air onsen near the Shinhotaka Ropeway with private baths? And how do we get there and back? The Kusakabe family were also gracious and friendly hosts, helping us along with the concierge and sharing their knowledge of Japan and Takayama plus their personal history—talking with them and touring the Folk Crafts Museum was a particular highlight, as many of the items on display are Kusakabe family heirlooms.

Fantastic guesthouse. Certainly the best i've ever stayed in. My family loved it. Beautifully appointed home. Host met us at the house and carefully explained everything. He went on to make a reservation for dinner for us and was always available to answer any questions for us during our stay. I only wish we could have stayed longer.

Our family enjoyed it a lot. The checkin with tablet was easy and went very well. The support from the owner was very good : we call late 1st night to understand how to get hot water and received immediately the answer. I definitely recommend and we will come back with pleasure.
