Situated in Matsumoto and with Matsumoto Station reachable within 1 km, Couch Potato Hostel features free bikes, non-smoking rooms, free WiFi throughout the property and a shared lounge. It was located at the heart of the city. Everything worth visiting is within 10mins of walk. The girl at the reception speaks perfect English, she is so warm and welcoming and has a lot of knowledge in the local food and drinks. The bed are surprisingly soft and warm, I never thought my best sleep throughout the trip would be in a hostel but couch potato deserve it all. Kitchen has everything you need can make a full meal if you want to. Shower was the hottest and strongest. I thoroughly enjoy the stay there.

Providing free WiFi, MOUNTAinn Nagiso is located in Nagiso, 4.7 km from Kotoku-ji Temple and 4.7 km from Sekibutsu Kanzan Jittoku Statue. Very well presented property with fully equipped kitchen (and best supermarket we found in Japan just down the road, a rare opportunity to stock up on fresh fruit and veg). Plenty of space and balcony for sitting outside. Options for tatami mat or western beds. Easy for transport just opposite the station, but also easy walk to the wooden bridge.

Providing free WiFi, Starfall Lodge is located in Hakuba, 9 km from Tsugaike Kogen Ski Area and 44 km from Nagano Station. The staff are super friendly and made our stay as comfortable as possible, the shuttle services made life so easy we were in want of nothing. They also partner with a ski rental store that collects your gear from the lodge when you done, if you are looking for a no-hassles stay in Hakuba this a good option.

Located in Hakuba, 8.3 km from Tsugaike Kogen Ski Area, The Bohemians' Shelter provides accommodation with a garden, free private parking, a shared lounge and a restaurant. Gaspard is a legend, and runs a really cool operation here. Family style dinners were excellent and affordable, and he has a ton of knowledge about skiing in Hakuba. Plus, the shuttle system he’s worked out works perfectly for getting to and from the slopes. Would not stay anywhere else

Situated in Nagiso, 8.4 km from Kotoku-ji Temple, Hostel Yui-an features accommodation with a garden, free private parking, a shared lounge and a terrace. This place is epic and unbelievably beautiful. Warm, cozy and unique. I will be back as soon as possible. Hosts are nice and helfpul. Erika made to us a great curry. I recommend this place for 100%.

1166 Backpackers is located in Nagano, within less than 1 km of Zenkoji Temple and 2.5 km of Nagano Station. With a shared lounge, the 1-star hostel has air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi. The staff was very welcoming and social. Orie responded to all our queries on email within minutes and Sakura and Etsuke were always available to share their insights or some chats over a cup of tea. The location was very close to the Zenkoji temple and within 500 m of many restaurants and coffee shops. The rooms were comfortable and the dorms had a bit of Japanese touch.

Located just a 10-minute walk from Happo One Ski Resort’s gondola, Morino Lodge offers cosy accommodation with spacious guestrooms and a modern lounge. Breakfast was delicious, the location ideal and the staff amazing. I highly recommend this lodge. Lisa

Set in Hakuba, 13 km from Tsugaike Kogen Ski Area, K's House Hakuba Alps - Travelers Hostel offers accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking. I had an incredible stay at K’s House Hakuba. The place is super clean and thoughtfully organized—clearly run by people who care about detail. As a digital nomad, I especially appreciated the cozy and peaceful common area, which made working remotely feel like home. What stood out most was the outstanding hospitality. The staff were kind, informative, and spoke excellent English. I arrived around midnight, and check-in was a breeze thanks to their 24-hour access system and thoughtful instructions with my key ready. While the hotel is around 15 minutes on foot from Kamishiro Station, the staff kindly gave me a ride in their shuttle. A special shoutout to Toshi, who generously lent me his crampons for my mountain hike — a total lifesaver! This is a superb and affordable base in rural Japan — perfect for backpackers, solo travelers, and anyone looking for a welcoming mountain stay. Highly recommended!
