When we arrived after a long day on the roads, she offered to upgrade us for a better sleep. Loved her!
Her house? A small paradise for any hiker arriving at Turangi! Clean, spacious, easy for socializing, offering a variety of facilities and free parking!
Definitely one of our best stays in whole new Zealand!
Taupo
Finlay Jack's Backpackers offers an ideal location in Taupo. The hostel offers single bed dormitory's.
Taupo is an absolute mecca for all things outdoors – including hiking the famous Tongariro crossing, trout fishing, skydiving, jet boating, white water rafting, mountain biking and sailing on the Great Lake with the hostel's yacht 'Fearless'.
The bed bunks are the best! very comfy mattress, lovely privacy curtain and enough space for your stuff. The stairs to te top bunks is big (block of wood) so not painful like most. The chill area in the middle was very nice, kitchen as big, the dog was cool and the staff is the best! I stayed here again on my way back for 4 nights and told all my travel friends to book here.

Thomas and Tracy are great people. They help you with whatever you need and they welcome you warmly in their place. It was really easy to book shuttle and carparking for Tongariro with them.
The accommodation was clean, comfortable and homey. You can play a lot of games at lobby and watch netflix.
This was highlight of staying in NZ, lovely place with lovely people :)
Ohakune
Situated in the town of Ohakune, on the edge of Tongariro National Park, LKNZ Lodge & Cafe is within 5 minutes' walk of restaurants, bars and shops. It features a sauna, hot tubs and an on-site cafe. The property offers a range of accommodation from budget dormitories to private rooms spread over 3 lodges and complimentary unlimited WiFi. Close to town. The hot tub and sauna soothes aching muscles after walks. The staff went over and beyond to make my stay absolutely amazing. Love the waffles from the cafe. Thank you Ella and Bridget!

It’s a great location to get to the crossing (if weather permits!) staff are lovely and there is a lot of kitchen space. Climbing wall if that’s your vibe. It’s a bit basic in terms of other kiwi hostels but good value for money.
This is the best hostel I have been so far. I can see the passion of the host. He loves bringing people together and he does not want to rip you of which I realy appreciate.

Hostel with a great location to the Tongariro National Park. Friendly Staff, big kitchen and shuttle service. Best of all, there is a climbing hall in the hostel! Highly recommend to stay here!
The lodge is bright and colourful. We had our own bunk room which was close to the bathrooms. The kitchen was big with lots of utensils. Great location for anyone doing the Tongariro Crossing or exploring the National Park. Adjacent bar was fun to pop in to and staff at both the hostel and bar were very friendly. Can highly recommend catching sunrise, the stars and sunset.
After one year of travelling all over New Zealand I can really say, Haka Lodge is the best Hostel I was staying in. I felt very safe, bathroom und kitchen were clean, nice staff and very good bedrooms. I was staying in a dormitory in Auckland in Haka Lodge and in Taupo in a double bedroom, both I would always recommend.
A great hostel - clean, well-equipped and cheap. We had an en suite double room - very comfortable and clean. Perfect base for our hike on the Tongariro Alpine crossing. Seemed like the majority of guests were more mature, like us, but one young lad also said it was the best hostel he had stayed in.
Good center location. 2 streets back from the water front. Plenty nearby places to eat and drink and get coffee and close to water sport tourist attractions. Others, a walk or quick drive such as Huka Falls and hot pools. The hostel is as to be expected if marked as a 3 star accomadation. Clean enough, safe feeling, cheap accomadation in convenient location but very basic. Bedding included, but you should bring towels and toiletries.
