Unique-Friendly Self Catering Cottages Whether your traveling for leisure or work you are sure to enjoy our delightful and well-appointed, self-catering 1 & 2 bedroom cottages, themed of an early Australian miners hut. They are air-conditioned, have ensuite, quality linen, a smattering of outback memorabilia, and a private courtyard where you can sit back and watch the magnificent sunsets while being serenaded by the local birdlife. The beautiful garden setting attracts an abundance of native wildlife with Wallabies and galahs as resident guests. Guests can enjoy the excellent barbeque facilities right beside the swimming pool. Chillagoe Cabins is a 5-minute drive from the world-renown Maungana Caves. and located over the Tableland two and half hours west of Cairns Traditional real Aussie meals are also available.
We purchased Chillagoe Cabins in 2019, Hailing from New Zealand, Colin worked for NZ Blood and Wendy was a Real Estate Manager - swapping our hectic schedules for a new life in the Outback wasn't too difficult a decision to make. ​We fell in love with the region's diversity from previous visits, ‘'There is just so much for tourists to see,” We promise you an unforgettable experience filled with lasting memories. Guest come as strangers and leave feeling part of the family.
Chillagoe a township rich in history was created in 1900 by the workers who toiled in the copper smelter, the many local mines. Chillagoe went on to become one of the largest metallurgical developments pre-World War 1. A population of thousands inhabited the area and relics from this past era are still visible. When the smelter closed in 1943, Chillagoe would have surely vanished if it wasn’t for the cattle trade and the tourism created by the vast cave systems that were constantly being discovered close to town. The population now hovers around 200. The spectacular fossil-rich limestone bluffs of Chillagoe has created unusual rock towers and over 700 documented caves, the largest known system having over 11kms of surveyed passage. Volcanic activity and intense mineralisation have created unique coloured marble and rich mineral deposits on the extremities of these bluffs. Chillagoe Cabins offer a range of tours to these incredible subterranean environments and Marble Quarries.
