FAQs about hotels in Canberra

Culture, Politics and Military Mix

A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.

Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.

The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.

The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.

Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

The huge range of things to see make Canberra a good place to visit. As a planned city, it has a feel quite different from any other Australian city. Even in winter it is usually bright and sunny during the day. It's bitterly cold at night and in the morning, though. Our car was covered in ice each morning - an unusual experience for us (we're from Melbourne). Canberra has wide roads and not too much traffic, but the layout can be confusing. Parliament House is impressive and fascinating, and Mt Ainslie has spectacular views. The Glasshouse (in Canberra's oldest building, the old power station) is different.

A very beautiful and planned city compared to the Sydney and Melbourne. Less noisy and less busy on weekends. Not sure about weekdays as I was there for a weekend. The surrounding places are very well maintained and clean. People are very nice and the traffic is very disciplined. There is hardly any noise even in the City centre. The food in the restaurants is cheaper compared to Sydney and the traffic is pretty less on the weekends. The Australian War Memorial and the museum inside it are a must go places as it has lot of relics and event scriptures from WWI and WWII along with other wars where Australia was involved. You will need a good 2-2.5 hours to visit this place. The Parliament House is a short visit and it takes 1 -1.5 hours to complete your visit. Lastly the drive through the NorthBourne street is a nice one.

Canberra is a well-planned and picturesque city, offering a wide range of activities and attractions for all ages. It’s especially family-friendly, with many free facilities and experiences such as the National Arboretum Canberra, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, Canberra Outlet, Questacon, and the Australian War Memorial. One of Canberra’s unique charms is its clearly defined four seasons. Each visit can feel entirely different—enjoy warm, sunny days in spring and summer, admire the vibrant colours of autumn, or experience the crisp, icy beauty of winter. There’s something for everyone: sip coffee in the city centre (Civic), explore the historic charm of Manuka, or try diverse cultural cuisines in Dickson. Outdoor lovers can cycle around Lake Burley Griffin, hike up Mount Ainslie for stunning views, or immerse themselves in knowledge and history at the National Library of Australia.

Do NOT book into 'Serenity at Stromlo' in Canberra.

Do NOT book into 'Serenity at Stromlo' in Canberra. Filthy dirty, dirty beds and human hair in between the sheets. Moldy bathroom and half used products in bathroom and kitchen. Mattress protectors covered in yellow stains and blood spots. GROSS! Completely unprofessional and unworthy of being listed on Bookings.com Bookings.com have chosen to ignore all our emails and when we go through the long and tedious process of calling them, they conveniently disconnect us as soon as a complaint is raised about one their listings. Not good enough Bookings.com We have been with you for soooo many years and this is how you treat our loyalty. We lost over $200.00 as we could not stay in this apartment as is was so dirty and we have not been able to get a refund through Bookings.com LOVE Canberra though and will be back again soon. Our favourite place is the Arboretum and the Zoo. Fantastic!

I returned to this hotel for two reasons, 1. location - excellent area of Canberra, close to great eateries, lake and city and 2. the bed I had my first stay was soooo comfortable, but was a little let down as the bed the second visit wasn't the same quality. Still have no hesitations staying here in future.
