Beautifully maintained gardens anda cosy house that was well appointed with a wonderful host. The location is perfect, the house gorgeous and the surrounding city of Robe all close at hand. The supplied provisions were handy, but could have been more comprehensive fo the price.

Let me tell you a little bit about Grey Masts. Built from local sandstone in the early 1850's. Lined with soft well-worn timbers, some of which were salvaged from the many shipwrecks that littered this coastline. Grey Masts has experienced a very colourful history. At the town's centre, she has been at the fore of all of Robe stages of development. From the early days of the Wool Industry in Australia where wool was stored in the sandstone shed in the garden and the cottage acted as chambers. She also played an amazing role in the arrival of many women from Scotland who were to make this part of the world their new homes. Then at the turn of the 20th century home to a family 12 children that grew up running through the rooms and over the thick wooden steps that still bear the imprints of their feet today. During the 1970s and all of the 1980s, she provided the space for a much-loved restaurant that people still enquire about today. As a family, we purchased the building at the very advent of the 21st Century. Commenced a thorough interior renovation and opened to the public in 2002. As Grey Mast's accommodation. If you do choose to stay, I hope you love it as much as I do.
I first came to know Robe as a very young boy. I was born in South East Asia where my parents had been living for years. They bought themselves a gorgeous stone cottage in Robe during the mid-1970s. After living and working in a variety of locations I decided I would call Robe my permanent address. I did so for ten beautiful years. During which time I built and ran a successful bookshop, before I moved back to Victoria as the father of a new family. I now split my life between Robe and Kyneton. I have always got one or two obsessions that I entertain, in the realm of artistic expression. My focus for the last few years has been writing. I right short stories and continue to practice the art of being a poet.
Robes community is a perfect reflection of it's a natural environment. The coastline is one of the most rugged I have ever known. You can have a night with storms that leave you feeling you are isolated on the very edge of the Terra Ferma of the earth (because you are). To then wake up to one of the prettiest days you could ever experience. The ocean taking on colours that range from the deepest emerald green to the prettiest of turquoise blue. The natural flora around the coast is home to some of the smallest and discrete Australian native plants you could wish to see. The main street is home to more than a dozen restaurants and coffee shops. Proudly showcasing wine, cheese and proteins from the area that are the best of what Australia can offer. With a genuine openness to the viting guests, who are very much a part of why Robe thrives today. So thank you to our visitors. Enjoy.
