The 'Jewel of the Bay' was built as one of a pair of holiday houses in 2006 by a local builder, Evco. We built it for our own use with the probability that it would be used by others along with the original, adjoining shack. We return twice a year to do maintenance and make improvements. We always had in mind a bright and airy place with a welcoming deck and a view across the bay. The house sleeps four in two QS beds with an additional single bed in the lower bedroom. This was placed in response to requests from guests who needed their child to be close to them. The living area is upstairs, the laundry is in the downstairs bathroom. The upstairs deck faces North and West and has sun blinds. The house is fully air-conditioned with split units in the bedrooms and living areas. All rooms also have ceiling fans. For winter heating we also have a gas space heater upstairs. There is a television with DVD player in the lower bedroom as well as upstairs in the living area. The kitchen is very well equipped, with all you might need for day to day cooking. There is a hooded barbeque on the deck, and another simple bbq under cover with the shack. The shack is a lined and insulated shed.
Lyn and Malcolm lived and worked in Ceduna for eight years. Lyn is a nurse and Malcolm now a part-time Lutheran parish pastor. Both established a close relationship with local Aboriginal people through their work and life in the community. Malcolm grew up on a farm then trained and worked in Adelaide and Port Lincoln as a fitter and turner. He is happy to return to Smoky Bay to catch blue swimmer crabs and make improvements to the house and shack. Lyn loves to make improvements to the shack and our (very basic) garden.
Smoky Bay is a tiny fishing village, now known widely for its excellent and succulent bay-grown oysters. It has a caravan park, 9 hole golf course, football oval, tennis and netball courts and a sporting club with bar. The General Store is also a fast food take-away and has the Post Office and Liquor outlet (bottle shop). The Smoky Bay jetty is very popular for fishing and squidding, and for crabbing during the Summer months. Many visitors bring their fishing dinghies (tinnies) to fish in the bay for King George Whiting, especially in the months from February to April.There is a safe enclosure for swimming as well as a vast and safe beach bordering the sheltered bay. There is good shopping in Ceduna, just 43 kilometres away. Ceduna also has a golf course, Arts and Cultural Centre and a regional airport with regular flights to Adelaide SA. South of Smoky Bay there is good fishing at Point Brown and Acramans creek.
