Jumilhac-le-Grand and Coussac-Bonneval are just a 10-minute drive away.
The cultural life of Saint-Yrieix is intense and has a dense program throughout the year. Especially in summer, when the famous "Salon de Aquarelle", the nightly summer market (Marché festif au Moulinassou), numerous concerts and sporting events take place.
The region also offers visits to many caves and historical sites, and visits to the castles of Jumilhac-le-Grand, Coussac-Bonneval, Ségur le Château, Arnac-Pompadour and Hautefort.
Saint-Yrieix is famous for its porcelain. The discovery of "kaolin" in Saint-Yrieix was the basis for the famous Limoges porcelain, which has been produced since the 18th century. Kaolin, an indispensable white clay and THE raw material for the production of porcelain, was discovered in 1766 near Sanit-Yrieix by the surgeon Jean-Baptiste Darnet.
After the discovery of white gold, as kaolin is also called, dozens of quarries were built near Saint-Yrieix, the most productive being that of Marcognac, located about 5 km from the city centre. It is now a listed building and is open to visitors.
Nowadays, there is still some local porcelain production in Saint-Yrieix, such as MP Samie, a small production at “Larédy” in “La Seynie” and the porcelain village „village de la porcelaine“ at the "plan d'eau", which also called Lake Arfeuille (lac d'Arfeuille).
