Breakfast Excellent. Staff all very friendly and helpful. Building is amazing. Location fantastic. Lots of good (non chainey) restaurants nearby.

Michael United Kingdom

The staff were brilliant throughout. The location of the hotel could not be better - city centre, but quiet and peaceful. Beautiful building. Considering the age of the property - 1098, some of it - the facilities were exceptional; functional, modern, and certainly what would be expected in a 21st centuary luxury hotel.

Peter United Kingdom

This place is a real jewel in York’s crown, steeped in history and beautifully kept. We will return.

Sally United Kingdom

Wonderfully located near York Minster, overlooking the city walls and with its own garden right in the centre of York. Breakfast was excellent - we had hoped to dine there but covid cancelled that.

Robert United Kingdom

A true sense of history. A complete one off. It was an experience to stay there rather than just being in a hotel.

Paula United Kingdom

The history. We will return. What a beautiful place.

Ruth United Kingdom

The room was impeccable. Staff amazing, couldn’t ask for more. Hotel steeped in history. Cleanliness fab. Breakfast very well served and presented. Location was perfect.

Christine United Kingdom

Beautiful original features and steeped in history. Excellent location. Brilliantly clean. Breakfast was amazing and the staff couldn’t do enough for you

Gemma United Kingdom

Lovely hotel in fantastic location. Staff all very helpful. Breakfast was lovely and the complimentary coffee and scones served in the beautiful long gallery a nice touch. A nice hotel with various areas to relax in. Gardens are absolutely beautiful and a lovely place to have a drink and enjoy the city walls which form a part of the perimeter of this hotel. Unfortunately the garden bar wasn’t open whilst we were there and the private direct access gate to the city walls was closed but think was due to weather and Covid respectively.

David United Kingdom

Beautiful location with an amazing garden, garden bar, brilliant & vey helpful staff. Stunning period features throughout the property, (Gray’s Court is truly a feast for the eyes). An extremely comfortable bed, pillows & a very large room. Plus the bath tub was out of this world!

Terry-lee United Kingdom

Excellent location!

Stay in the heart of York – Excellent location - show map

One of our bestsellers in York! With views across York’s medieval walls, Grays Court Hotel is a beautiful historic house with leafy gardens, an intimate restaruant and free Wi-Fi. The grand house is situated beside York Minster, and was once home to King James I.

The stylish bedrooms feature fine linens and antique furniture. Rooms also have flat-screen satellite TV, and all offer scenic views of the gardens or York Minster.

The Bow Room Restaurant serves a 9-course tasting menu in the evening and has been awarded 2 AA rosettes. During the day the property serve drinks from the bar, teas and coffees and a cream tea with home-made scones and preserves. A full cooked to order breakfast is served each morning.

Guests can relax in the pretty gardens, or in the Bow Room with its impressive art collection. The Jacobean Long Gallery with oak panelling, sofas and original paintings is a delightful place to unwind.

This country house is steeped in history, and set within the York walls. Grays Court Hotel Hotel is a 5-minute walk from the picturesque Shambles shopping streets. The Theatre Royal and York Museum and Gardens are within a 10-minute walk.

This is our guests' favourite part of York, according to independent reviews.

Couples particularly like the location — they rated it 9.9 for a two-person trip.

  • Is your parking near to the hotel as we have a blue badge.

Thank you for your enquiry. Our car park is located in our courtyard, directly in front of our hotel entrance, so it is very close by. Parking is for residents of the hotel only and costs £15 per evening. Spaces are limited so we definitely recommend reserving a space in advance if one is required. With regards to the blue badge, please be aware that our hotel does not have a lift and all of our rooms are accessed via stairs. This is due to our historic building's Grade I listing, meaning we are limited as to how much we can alter the structure of the house.

An inside look at Grays Court Hotel

Grays Court is truly unique - a country house in the heart of the bustling city of York. It dates back to 1080 in part and has had a plethora of historically noted figures visit over the years - King James I, William Wilberforce, the Duke of Cumberland and the Duke of Somerset to name but a few. It's located mere minutes away from York Minster, and boasts a stunning cobbled courtyard with striking pollarded Plane trees lining the way to the front door, and half an acre of beautiful garden encircled by the historic Bar Walls.

    Verified reviews from real guests.

We have more than 70 million property reviews, and they're all from real, verified guests.

    How does it work?

    • 1

      It starts with a booking

      It starts with a booking

The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.

    • 2

      Followed by a trip

      Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff are and more.

    • 3

      And finally, a review

      And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

If you booked through us and want to leave a review, please sign in first.
