It was so spacious,well equipped,so beautifully organised and clean. Such awesome views and amazing wildlife. Hiking trials and biking trails are so great. Such a warm welcome on arrival and such wonderful and interesting hosts. One of our best stays yet.

If you are looking for seldom found privacy and seclusion, here at Amohela there are BIG spaces between cottages for maximum privacy and seclusion, and, adjacent to the self catering cottages there is a 135 hectare Conservancy with a superb small mountain with a stair-walk up to the first plateau and the most awesome views across the vastness and huge silence of the scenically stunning Eastern Highlands. There are walks, hikes, climbs into the small mountain, swimming, cycling, small mammal viewing, scenic beauty, stars to take your breath away. No day guests are allowed, and guests booked into our classy and comfortable accommodation can wander the Conservancy and Retreat in privacy and freedom to take in the restored grasslands filled with native plants and wild flowers, where wild pollinators flourish, we have a bird check list of over 250 species, comprehensive checklists of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, spiders, butterflies, lizards, dragon flies, and trees and shrubs that occur here at Amohela and locally.

THE RETREAT, in the Eastern Highlands of the Free State, is nestled in a valley between the farming villages of Ficksburg & Clocolan, with views that stretch to the majestic Maluti Mountains. The three EarthStone Family Cottages are large, with double bedrooms, pampering bathrooms and large open plan living areas with open fires and big comfy couches. The bedrooms have king or queen sized beds with cuddly duvets and single/three quarter beds. The bathrooms have large glass fronted showers and big bath-tubs for soaks in lots of steamy hot water-we are blessed with a strong water supply. Bedrooms and bathrooms have wall heaters, there are heated blankets on all the beds for chilly weather. A fully equipped kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and weber braai on the covered deck. There are are two SkyWind Cottages, barn style with high beamed ceiling and open plan spaciousness, beautiful pampering baths and enclosed shower and toilet, a fully equipped kitchen & weber braai on the patio-with-a -view, this all comes together to define these awesome dwelling places for just two in quietness, space and luxury. There are combustion fires, king size beds and big cosy duvets.

Neighborhood info

There are superb eateries with interesting shopping, beautiful day drives to local villages, the awesomely beautiful mountains of Lesotho and the Ski Resort, a golf course where plains game wander, the well known Cherry Festival is held every November, and the many cherry farms open their doors to visitors. We have prepard trails on and off the Retreat for great mountain biking and cycling as well as birding on local dams and pans. The Eastern Free State is well known for the massive sandstone buttresses that turn from shades of yellow to deep red in the setting sun, and the area forms part of a Scenic Route known as The Sandstone Route. A 40 minute drive will take you to the worlds largest privately owned Steam Locomotive & Railway Collection and includes fascinating vintage cars and tractors.
