Arguably the finest private art museum there is. If not as consistently perfect in almost all its pictures as the Frick, a much, much larger collection than either the Frick, the Wallace Collection, the Norton Simon, or the Huntington. Though not housed in equal splendor, definitely a superior level of sheer connoisseurship to that of the lovely Getty. When you combine the holdings of the Prado, the Thyssen, and the much less impressive but still interesting Reina Sofia, Madrid’s not only incomparably greater for painting than Barcelona, but also only bested by Paris, London, New York, Berlin, and Venice in the Western world. Because of the winginess of Gaudi, right-thinking Americans are supposed to prefer Barcelona to Madrid. But for serious art-lovers, and lovers of urban cityscapes and parks, Madrid is far superior.
