This is a lovely clean west-facing beach about 7km long with smooth clean sand up to 150m in width. Most of the year it is virtually empty with just the occasional jogger. 99% of the time the weather is superb. Unlike beaches in many other places in Spain, quite a few of the restaurants and cafes stay open all year, as there are quite a few people living in the immediate area. At the southern end is the Torre Puerco (yes, pig tower) which was part of a defensive system built up towards the end of the 18th century. Barrosa was also the site of a battle about the beginning of the 19th century in which a lot of people were killed with very little to show for it. At that time the entire hinterland was either marshes (much of which is preserved today) or grassed sand dunes. It made it difficult for armies to move around, so instead they fought in unsuitable terrain, with neither side having an advantage. There is almost nothing around today to record this battle.
