Visit the Louvre was an amazing experience. My suggestion is to book ahead (to avoid long queues) and once inside, visit the Mona Lisa last (see the sculptures and other levels first) to make the most of your experience. At the same time, allocate 3-4 hours of your day just exploring the Louvre.
Do not underestimate the size of this place - it is vast. Depending on your fascination with art, you could easily spend a day here. We took our time on one floor before realising how long it was going to take us to get round so then decided which pieces we wanted to see & then had a more planned route…we were there nearly 3 hours!
Yes we saw the Mona Lisa, and a loads of other art. But compared to other museums like the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, or the Tate in London. This one has a lot of the same era and type of art. Making it after a while, boring... Also get your tickets in advance at the official website, get you in faster and cheaper. Do this way in advance, sells out.
Probably only one word to describe this place - Overwhelming! Everywhere you look takes you to different places, spaces, and time. It can get crowded, especially around the major pieces, so look for the hidden gems.
One of the best museums in the world. Loads of artwork and sculptures. In fact, there is so much things to see that it is impossible to visit the complete museum in one day. Keep enough time in your hands as you have to do a lot of walking inside and pre-plan which sections you really want to see as the museum is enormous. Monalisa looks good, but very very crowded and you cannot reach close enough to appreciate the art.
Hugely over-crowded, and has a serious problem with pick-pockets.!When we visited, the problem was so bad that the place shut down for the day. Even the Staff had their pockets picked! The management needs to get a serious grip on the seething mass of people who just want to say that they have been to The Louvre. My suggestion would be that hourly tours with a limited number of people in each group, targeted on certain areas, such as Impressionism.
Great location in the 2nd arrondissement, with many restaurants nearby and easy access to metro and Louvre museum. Bed was comfortable, large windows that could open for more light and fresh air. It was convenient to have enough storage space for our clothes, and to have a small fridge available. Spacious bathroom with tub was a nice surprise. Looked like it was recently renovated.
We loved the location, since we could walk to the workplace, and also allow explore by foot the Triumph arch, champs Elysee, Eiffel tower and the Louvre Museum. The breakfast was very delicious, and we had a free room upgrade to experience the renovated rooms with an awesome view of the Eiffel tower from our big terrace! We couldn't ask for more!
A great hotel. The staff is extremely courteous and professional. Exceptional location close to Notre Dame and Louvre Museum. For certain my wife and I will stay again at La Lantern Hotel in our next trip to Paris. Thank you and congratulations.
Location is exceptional - everything within walking distance. Louvre museum and all major sites. Staff was very friendly and very helpful. Place is easy to found and its also close to metro station and local train RER station
Location, within a short walking distance to the Notre Dame Cathedral, Louvre museum, shopping & restaurants.
The room was bright and wide, super close to the Louvre museum
Go to the Louvre on a Thursday, it's a lot quieter. Don't queue up at the pyramid; use the underground entrance next to the metro. If you're under 26, don't queue for a ticket, just show your passport at the entrance to the exhibitions
Choose hotels and restaurants that aren't "name-branded" chains. Explore side streets. Go to mass instead of just touring Notre Dame or Sacre Coeur. Visit the Louvre on Sunday when it is free to mingle with the locals. Take the metro instead of cabs. It's cheaper and can be part of the adventure if you live in a city without a subway.
Musee d'Orsay had an exhibition of Van Gogh's work which was amazing. I also really enjoyed Musee Rodin which has his sculptures displayed in the gardens which are worth a visit in their own right. The scent of roses was lovely. It is also great to watch the artists at work in the streets around Sacre Coeur Cathedral. The architecture of buildings in Paris is also really attractive and varied. And then there is the Louvre - really too much to take in on one visit.
Musee du Louvre is, in my opinion, the best starting place. Be prepared to spend a whole day there.
The Louvre and Musee D'Orsay for the major collections and The Orangery for Monet's Waterlillies for a taster of Impressionism.
If you pick your time it is not that busy. Definitely get onto a small group guide of the Louvre though
