The best and cheap way to get there is taking a bus No 434 from the bus station (next to Sintra train station) or other bus stops in the old Sintra. Ticket price 3,90 euro. I recommend to buy a combine ticket for the palace and the gardens. The gardens are huge place, don’t nececery need to go the main trail. All together at least 3 hours, if you want to feel the magic of this place. On the way back you can go to Moorish Castle and then follow the trail to the village.
For sure is the highlight of Sintra, so expect to be crowd with tourists. Try arrive as early as possible and take bus, parking can be nightmare and you may need to park at side of road far from the entrance. Can spend whole day if you would like to walk to other sightseeing points within the park.
It gets very busy and the queues are long. We got there very early and waited in line about 20 mins, as we were leaving the queue was taking over an hour and people were turning away rather than wait.
Go early early and catch a cab there and back - no parking to be found, and the traffic is a killer. If you don't find a park, you get stuck on a 10km one way loop in heavy traffic which take 40 minutes to do. If you arrive after about 10am, there is a 2 hour wait to get into the palace itself. Go in the off season if such a thing exists.
Crowds of tourists - even if you arrive by 10am. Cafe by exit is very basic. Only walk up to the cross if you have s clear day - otherwise you’re up in the clouds and won’t see a thing! It’s a longish walk too
It was super busy and a pain to get to/from. It's a pretty building but a lot of walking and climbing. I prefer my castles to be older with lots of history. I'm glad I saw this once, but I wouldn't personally go back. If you're in really good shape and like to hike you'd probably enjoy it more. The gardens and property are very pretty to walk around (but challenging).
