Set in Mount Cook National Park, a range of accommodation including motel rooms and lodge rooms are on offer at Mt Cook Lodge and Motels. The onsite Chamois Bar & Grill offers pub style meals, as well as a billiards table and large screen TVs showing sports events. We got this room so we could enjoy the amazing views of Mt. Cook a little longer. Unfortunately, it rained the whole day we were there, but the beautiful room at Mt. Cook Lodge and Motel gave us a comfortable place to hang out and relax.

Just 3 minutes’ drive from Lake Benmore, Ahuriri Motels features a barbecue area with outdoor seating and lovely mountain views. A flat-screen TV and a microwave are standard in all rooms. Guests receive 250MB of free WiFi, and free on site parking. Loved that the staff were quick thinking enough to leave our room keys in an envelope outside the office to allow us to check in late. This was really kind of them and I highly recommend Ahuriri solely based on this experience. The room itself was clean and perfect for one night's stay.

Location is good, very convenient to find, and it’s the best place to have a rest out of a self driving trip from Christchurch to Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki, etc. The hosts are very kind and welcoming, love the bed especially, it’s very soft and comfortable.

All guest rooms in Colonial Motel are equipped with a flat-screen TV and a hairdryer. This was one of the best places we stayed during our trip in NZ. Our suite was so spacious and comfortable. The only flaw was that the room was a bit dusty, which triggered my allergies. However, from our own experience in the car, the whole area is pretty dusty overall, which is not their fault. Everything else was spotless. It has everything a person might need, as it is fully contained. We just didn't make more use of the kitchen because the area had so many lovely places to eat out.

Conveniently located next to a historical pub and restaurant, Mt Dobson Motel offers self-catering accommodation with unlimited free WiFi. The motel is set in a garden with outdoor seating and BBQ facilities. This delightful (and tiny, 5 room) motel was the perfect stop for us. We were not looking to city walk in the evening, but if we were, it was about 30 minutes away from Lake Tekapo. Instead we went to dinner at a delightful restaurant in nearby Fairlie (6 minutes), the only town of consequence. (Kimbell is not a town, just a spot on the map.) We could also have had dinner at the delightful Silverstream Hotel, which is not related to the Mt. Dobson Motel although they share a parking lot. The room was very large and had a full kitchen which would have been very useful if our stay was more than one night. It was a bit of step-back-in-time furnishings but impeccably clean. On our way out of town the next day we stopped at the Fairlie Heritage Museum and learned a lot about the area. They had a section devoted to the Hamilton Jet boat engine... this company invented the jet boat and is the world's largest manufacturer of them; he got his start here! That was a delightful (unresearched) surprise! It has a little cafe as well. We also ate at the popular Fairlie Bakeshop in town.
