"Mons is the site of the first contact between the British Expeditionary Force and the invading German armies in August 1914. The British were stuck in a difficult position owing to the fact that their flanking French allies had retreated without informing the British, and they had to dig in along the Mons-Conde-Charleroi canal, which they held against all odds for the day of 23rd August 1914. Not only were the first shots exchanged here, but also the first two Victoria Crosses were won during the battle. If you have a good guide or guidebook, the greater part of the battlefield is largely unchanged, and after a day of looking round, you have the town square of Mons, where the troops rested before moving up to contact. The square is unchanged, and anyone who has seen any of the photos taken at the time will be able to situate themselves easily - while enjoying a beer of a meal at any of the town's excellent bars and restaurants. I recommend the Lebanese restaurant on the main square."

We had a lovely time staying here. The hosts were so welcoming and friendly, and really made us feel at home — especially important as we were travelling with our 1-year-old daughter. The house is beautifully decorated, really peaceful and comfortable, with a big garden and large toy room. Our room was super comfortable and everything was spotlessly clean. Both dinner and breakfast were fresh and amazing too. It’s such a relaxing and family-friendly place, and you can tell a lot of love and care has gone into it. We only stayed one night as we were travelling to Pairi Daiza, but we’d definitely love to come back one day!

A brilliant hotel in central Maubeuge. A 5 minutes walk from the train station, with free parking for hotel guests. The rooms are nice with very comfortable beds. Great showers in the bathrooms, really nice. The windows offer nice views over the town and the choice to upgrade rooms is brilliant. Very polite and friendly staff, helpful and nice. I did not try the restaurant below the hotel, but it looks fantastic and was busy with local people eating there every night, so definitely going to try that next time.

The city of Mons is one of those towns that is overlooked in...

The city of Mons is one of those towns that is overlooked in Belgium. You can use this small villa as a hub to go and visit the nearby towns. The train station was recently updated beautifully. You can reach Brussels in one hour from Mons by train. Either in winter or summer, Mons is worth a visit.

The animal park is astonishing, the best one I have ever...

The animal park is astonishing, the best one I have ever been to, absolutely worth the visit even without kids. Especially in spring when everything is blooming. The fauna goes without saying but also the plants and flowers are wonderful as well as the architecture, taken to the perfection. And the steam train! 15 out of 10 for me!

Perfect location for visiting Pairi Daiza. Kids are tired after long day in zoo, so then it is convenient if you have a location close by. City center of Ath looks also nice for a stroll, but we did not do this because we had not enough time left for this

Nice small country town with new industrial facilities kept out of town. Nice farming country landscapes. Highways nearby (N7, E429). Multiple great and casual eating facilities and new grocerystore nearby. Fifteen min. to Paira Daiza (largest zoo in all of Europe), 45 min. from Brussels and airport, 25 min. to Tournai/Doornik.

The hotel was in a great location within easy reach of shops...

The hotel was in a great location within easy reach of shops, bars and restaurants and the train station was just a short walk away. We ate at LE NOVA and had a lovely meal, the staff were great, making us feel very welcome and the food was fab too. There are some lovely sights to see, such as the cathedral and the Belfry. Its a very picturesque City.

We went to St.

We went to St. Symphorien cemetery and also various museums. I have an interest in Mons because of my grandfathers involvement there on the 23rd August 1914 when he was wounded and taken as a POW. It has a lot to offer visually and historically and I found the people to be very friendly on the fives times I have visited the city. There are some great restaurants in the square and we ate around there regularly.
