I had a really satisfying stay at Atour Hotel on Ganjiang...

I had a really satisfying stay at Atour Hotel on Ganjiang East Road. What impressed me most was the fantastic location. We could walk to Guanqian Street for local snacks and ancient‑town sights. Public transport was close by, so we travelled around Suzhou without trouble. The room was kept very clean. Facilities functioned well: strong hot‑water supply and effective air‑conditioning. Sound proofing was decent so street noise hardly disturbed us. The soft bed allowed us to rest properly after sightseeing. The front‑desk team did a nice job. They understood simple English, responded quickly to our requests, offered travel advice and kept our luggage after check‑out. For foreign visitors wanting to experience Suzhou city, this hotel is a solid option. I will choose it again for my next visit.

The most beautiful city I have visited in China.

The most beautiful city I have visited in China. It has several historic old places, but also a modern side. There are many interesting sights, including the inner city walls, Confucius Temple, islands with lovely promenades, streets with a charming market, small shops, craft shops, pubs, restaurants and food stalls. It is a lively city.

Wuxi made it virtually impossible for foreigners.

Wuxi made it virtually impossible for foreigners. They require the use of an App called Linxi but this cannot be used by expats. Your passport has to be registered in Wuxi in order to use the App. I had to ask a colleague to help add me to theirs. She had to list me as a dependant (child). The next problem was trying to explain to people they had to scan my QR code which nobody understood how to. This experience made me never want to travel here again. Even the PCR tests weren't linked to Alipay therefore upon returning to my home city, I was unable to use the metro to get home!

Great city and friendly people!

Great city and friendly people! Definetly try all the local food. Check out Qing Guo Xiang if you have a few hours to walk around. Maybe also check out Hong Mei park in the morning and see grandpas doing caligraphy with a mop on the floor. Easy to get around. There's a few amusement parks around but i'm over that age.

Brilliant town not far from Shanghai.

Brilliant town not far from Shanghai. You can visit for a day trip but really you need to spend a couple of days there to see all the sights. We visited the Humble Administrator’s Garden, the Lingering Garden and the Lion Grove all of which are definitely worth seeing - but not all on one day otherwise you get gardened out. The hotel is almost directly on Shiquan Jie which is a great street for food and shops. We went in December and there were lots of Christmas trees, twinkle lights etc which were lovely. You don’t need to go on an organised trip to Suzhou as the train system is very easy. Buy your tickets on Trip.com and turn up with your passport which acts as your ticket. Everything is clearly signposted and although mostly in Chinese, if you have the number of your train you can’t go wrong.

We only had three days in Nanjing before joining an...

We only had three days in Nanjing before joining an organised tour around other cities in China. So we had to get by pretty much on our own. We visited the Zhonghua Gate and walked on the city wall, went to the observation deck (78th floor) of the tallest building, the Zifeng Tower, and visited the Nanjing Massacre Museum. The museum is amazing. Like everything else we visited in China, it has been done very well. The pictures and stories of the survivors are well presented, the photos and information are very moving. The music and lighting as well as the building are very impressive. We also had a great evening in the Confuscious Temple Qinhuai Scenic Area. It was bright and busy with amazing sights and we took the opportunity to take a night river boat ride which we were really impressed with. We ate hot pot in Haidilao in a shopping mall (very interesting!), noodles in a tiny place on the street, beef and ale pie in an Irish bar and schnitzel in a German restaurant. There is a great variety of food venues. Restaurants are always busy so don't ever be late for a booking because your table will be given away! Getting around was super easy by Didi (similar to Uber) and very cheap. We used Alipay and some cash to pay for our purchases. Chinese people were happy to help us when we were stuck despite there being very few tourists in the city. Signs were in Chinese and English most places we went which meant we weren't completely lost all the time! Overall we had a fabulous time in Nanjing and would recommend it as a city to visit if you are in China.

We stayed in tourist oriented low rise part of Suzhou near the Suzhou Museum and Humble Adminstrators Garden. Nice area and a different to Shanghai for sure. One surprise I did discover was an almost deserted Suzhou China Silk Archives about 50 or 100 metres on the right. It’s down a parking style roadway past a gate and looks from the street like an expensive apartment block. However once inside it’s got some fantastic silk exhibits and historical info though most but not signage is Chinese.

Nanjing is one of China great 4 ancient capitals packed with historical sites and cultural landmarks. Their cuisine is superb, I love how juicy the duck meat is, love how fragrant the osmanthus flower added to the sweet and desserts . Nanjing is definitely a must-visit for history geek and gastronoms.
