The Bright Isle

Located on the southern side of the French Atlantic coast, the Island of Oleron (Île d'Oléron) is the second largest French island after Corsica. Connected with the mainland since 1966, this beautiful holiday spot is popular for its sandy beaches, surfing and horse-riding.

Known for its oysters, the colourful fishing port of La Cotinière is an excellent place to experience the unloading of sardines from fishing boats. Just 3 km further you will find the capital of the island - Saint-Pierre d'Oléron.

The charming village of Saint Trojan-les-Bains has a long golden beach and lush forest., while the lighthouse of Chassiron - known as the Phare de Chassiron - is at the extreme north of the island. This famous attraction with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean takes you through the history of Oleron Island.

Beautiful garden was the 1st thing I saw , followed a most warm welcome .Our hosts were super friendly and exceedingly knowledgable on their island .Our room was joyously decorated in oranges and yellows thoughtfully matched and put together . Generous huge soft white superior towels were waiting . The bedding was matching to the citrus decor .Many touches showed thoughtfulness from our hosts .Hot water always available from a fuss free shower which always produced ample water in the dinky neutral shades bathroom .our hosts were always on hand should we need more information but at the same time discreet .I really liked the idea of a shared kitchen in the garden as I have food allergies which I thought to use to alleviate my problem .Spotless cleanliness should be mentioned too .

Nice fishing village with plenty of restaurants and tourist-...

Nice fishing village with plenty of restaurants and tourist-oriented shops. The village centre is a harbour and the beaches are on the edge of the village. The main town, St Pierre, is very close and worth a visit. We enjoyed our visit to Boyardville on the other side of the island where there are many boat trips available.

The town is quite spread out - cars or bicycles are needed...

The town is quite spread out - cars or bicycles are needed to get around. Most of the town faces the main beach area which is very oyster production orientated and not very pretty. There are a number of great restaurants and a nice town centre by the church - it’s not immediately obvious. The council has gone to great lengths to make the public areas nice with gardens and promenades.

There isn't a lot to La Bree - scattered shops and restaurants and a small supermarket. The Casa di Giorgiani restaurant offers tapas and pizzas on the sign but no tapas on the menu. Service poor - forgot our drinks order. The other pizzeria near the market was better. Market very good. Beach bar l'Atypique great for drinks, but ran out of food at 1:30pm and refused to serve other food on their 'aperos' menu. Creperie was supposed to be open on Thursday evening, but was shut. Holiday saved by finding excellent restaurant Villa Coco at Port du Douhet.

It’s a convenient place to stay having all facilities you can wish for within walking distance. It’s not a big city feeling more like a village. You can easily discover the rest of the island from there, either by car or by bicycle. Lots of things to do nearby.

Stay overnight in order to explore Island on our first visit - located centrally. Great for seaside shops and choice of restaurants for evening, which suited our needs. Touring around enabled us to appreciate the smaller villages, and stunning coastline.

The busy fishing port and fresh fish markets were of great interest, and there was plenty of choice at restaurants -particularly if you wanted to eat fresh fish! The island is really well set-up for cycling-cycle lanes abound and the island of Oleron is flat. The oyster gathering industry is another distinctive feature of the Island.
