There are truly no words to describe the perfection of this place. The gorgeous pictures do not do it justice, as in real life it is 100 times even more gorgeous. The view is astounding, the attention to detail is extreme, the luxury is felt in every single little thing (textures, materials, colors, service, etc), the breakfast and the food/cocktails are delicious and the personnel extremely kind and available. This is by far one of the best luxury boutique hotel where we have ever stayed and will come back for sure.

If your idea of luxury is something sleek and modern, then this may not initially be what you're expecting. Perhaps 'rustic', 'traditional' or even 'Grandma chic' would be better descriptors, but what this place lacks in modern refinement it more than makes up for in other ways. Our stone villa was charming, characterful and spacious with stunning views and a beautiful courtyard and private garden. There are equally wonderful views from the lovely, uncrowded pool and restaurant area too and the food in the restaurant is superb—undoubtedly one of the best places to eat on the island. Yet surprisingly, the villas, the food and the location aren't even the best parts of this accommodation, it's actually the quality of service. Eirini and Christos are gracious hosts and their staff are all, without exception, excellent. When we encountered a medical problem that needed addressing they were concerned and helpful and throughout our stay everyone who works here was personable, efficient and friendly. All in all, I can't wait for the opportunity to revisit.

Staying at Porto Scoutari is one of the big reasons we loved Patmos. Elina and Kiki made our stay wonderful. Elina is a very gracious, helpful and caring host. Nothing was too much trouble. Our room was immaculately clean and beautifully presented. The sunrise and sunset from our balcony were highlights. We left Patmos with heavy hearts, however, wonderful memories of a wonderful host and beautiful hotel. Thank you Elina! Andrew and Eleitsa

The location was exceptional, right at the path up to the Cave of the Apocalypse. From our spacious balcony, we had a stunning view over the harbour, the monastery above the cave and Chora with the Monastery of St. John towering over it. The place had the charm of the local architecture, with the inside being tastefully furnished with the basic things you need. You need to be able to climb flights of stairs, as is the case on most islands.

The view. The decor. The gardens. The location. Outstanding and comfortable studio apartment. We had fruit, cheese, ham, bread & water provided for our arrival, so thoughtful. Our host George was kind, calm & so handsome! An Adonis! He met us at the port, carrying our luggage, advising hire car and drove us to our apartment. When we were getting ready to leave, George arrived to carry our luggage to the car.

Breakfast was excellent, all home cooked, very fresh and top quality. The menu changed on daily basis. It’s a family owned business and they see you as part of their family and treat you accordingly. Concierge service was excellent. The hotel is also 2 min. walking distance to the see, which is one of the best bays on the island.

Lively little town with plenty of options for eating and drinking at reasonable prices. Gets even livelier when the cruise ships dock... but they don't stay long. A small town beach ideal for families. Buses take you to other key places on the island from near the port. But the shops are really expensive if you want to buy clothes, jewellery or that type of souvenir - astronomical in fact! Is that because of the cruise ships or the yachting brigade? Who knows, but a dress in Patmos is 4x the price of a similar item in Kos Town. Very chi-chi shops.

The food is not perfect we been there in end of June but all the bars restruants told us that the season is not started. It is not good attiude because the city was not empty and it is the middle of the summer. There was no live music no live performences. so dotn expect a nice athmosphere or entertaining night in Patmos. The food is not very good if you compare to Rhodes Leros or Chios or Samos. Also it is way more expensive than these islands. The beaches are quite good and it is a compact island but still need to rent a car or moto. I believe not enough good resturants in centers like scala hora and the ones offered as the best resurants are overrated with very high prices comparing the other islands. People the store owners are abit snob and not so smiling. There are not so many good hotels hotels are usally very old and not offering much. There is not even 1 modern property. The archtieacture and the house designs are not looking good looking old and same boring style

Grikos is about a 10 minute drive from the port city of Skala. Skala has a beautiful down-town feel with plenty of restaurants and shopping. Grikos is further away and will require, at least for us, a rental to do all the things we wanted. There is a very reasonable rental business called Camel on that part of the island and they have cars and scooters. Taxis are also available. It has more of a residential feel over the down-town. However, beaches are always nearby on an island. I enjoyed getting to drive on the mountains to the places we wanted to go.

Our stay was magical.

Our stay was magical. The property is located a few kilometres outside of Skala so it is best to rent a vehicle (we hired a bike from Leo’s Moto) but this means you have space, privacy and a lovely, secluded, shared beach just a stones throw from the house. We explored in the morning on our bike and came back to our beach in the afternoon. The house itself is decorated authentically and was very spacious. The air conditioning was much appreciated! It’s a great spot!

We hiked up to the Cave of the Apocalypse.

We hiked up to the Cave of the Apocalypse. The cave was very moving and I noticed the smell of the incense. We then walked on up to the monastery of St. John the Theologian. Very impressive structure. We took many pictures. The roosters were crowing as we walked up the hill. We saw goats in several backyards. And we saw many cats —everywhere. We had a late breakfast at Benetos Chora on the way back to our flat in Skala. Very, very good and at a reasonable price; I would definitely go back. Once back in Skala, we walked west toward the opposite waterfront. This side is unprotected from the Mistral winds from the Northwest, so no boats are moored here. The beach there is very rocky.

Patmos mid-September still has plenty of visitors but isn't packed. It feels laid back and relaxed. There are some lovely beaches - our favourites included Kampos, Livadi and Psili Amos (which takes a hike to get to - wear good shoes). There is a great variety between the beaches being sand, pebble, stones. You definitely need to budget for hiring a car or scooter to get about - though there are taxis too. There's plenty to visit in terms of monasteries, windmills, traditional ship yard, plus driving to some of the more out of the way places is interesting. It's easy and worthwhile to get a ferry to Lipsos or one of the other nearby islands for a day trip. We stayed for 10 days and it felt just right.

Grikos is a pretty sea-front village with five tavernas, one organised beach and two unorganised beaches. It's perfect for a quiet and relaxing holiday. The port of Skala, the main town, is 3 kilometres away, and buses costing two euros run regularly throughout the day and into the early evening. There's also a car and scooter hire establishment for those who prefer their own transport. There is no grocery-store in Grikos, but Skala is close enough to not make this too much of an inconvenience.

We had no car so we enjoyed exploring by walking and finding that distances were not that large - for example our best walk was uphill from Skala to Chora (and mainly on footpaths, not roads), then downhill to Grikos Bay, then along the coast past an interesting large rock formation to some shipyard, then a bit of road to the opposite coast finishing with a short interesting hike to Psili Ammos beach with wonderful golden sands! After swimming and a good taverna meal we walked back to Grikos Bay and then took a bus back to Skala. The bus timetable was not too large and we found we had to plan well if wanting to get the bus back home on any occasion but then again taxis probably would not cost much, it is a small island after all. Plenty of bakeries in Skala but you might find that one has a lot of sweet cakes and no croissants, so keep hunting till you find what you want! If we had had more time we would have taken the Patmos Star ferry to Leros for the day but at least we know for next time. There is a small beach in the harbour opposite Ammos Cafe - cafe on the sandy beach and one changing cubicle - we never got round to swimming there but it always looked clean and attractive for a dip!

Patmos is a beautiful and busy place.

Patmos is a beautiful and busy place. The town of Skala is great for shopping and walking. There are lovely beaches around the island, which can be reached by boat or car, but they are well worth the effort. A visit to the monastery and the town of Chora, with its many restaurants, shops, and great views, is also a must. Overall, it is a gorgeous island, but be prepared for some cold seawater.
