Excellent hotel! For us, it was a stopover to break a long drive, and we really enjoyed our stay. It was friendly, clean, comfortable, quiet and safe. The room size was generous, as was breakfast. Staff were warm and friendly. Great to have free parking and getting on and off the highway was easy. Would definitely choose this hotel again.

FAQs about hotels in Calabria

Italy’s Best-Kept Secret

Boasting fantastic beach resorts on its 2 coastlines, Calabria forms the toe of the Italian boot. A favourite of Italian holidaymakers, it is in many respects the region that Italy doesn’t want you to know about.

With some of Booking.com’s best Calabria hotels, Tropea has a fabulous beach at the foot of sheer cliffs topped by buildings. Neighbouring Capo Vaticano has beautiful beaches and a craggy coastline, and Scilla is another amazing Tyrhennian coast resort, immortalised in Greek mythology.

Gioia Tauro has an important port, as does Reggio Calabria, the region’s largest city and birthplace of Gianni Versace. It has an excellent archaeological museum housing the Riace bronzes – Greek statues from the 5th century BC. Just north at Villa San Giovanni, trains drive straight onto ferries to Messina in Sicily.

Inland is Aspromonte National Park, one of Calabria’s top tourist sights, while the Pollino National Park is in the north. Its nearest city is Cosenza with a tranquil old town and 13th-century castle. South is Lamezia Terme, site of the region’s main airport, and nearby Catanzaro is the Calabrian capital.

Crotone on the Ionian coast has a long, sandy beach, as does Soverato. Roccella Ionica’s beach is overlooked by a 16th-century castle, and inland Gerace is one of Italy’s best preserved medieval villages.

We came without any prior research of the property, just in last minute decision... and first day was cultural shock :), but at the end of the day we like it so much, because of the quietness of the property, stunning sunsets, beachfront, the storey of the plot, with the highest part being about 60 meters above sea level where was our apartment situated. Also there are a shuttle who moves you up or down if you are not relay on your legs :) - The apartment was well conditioned and dries the air, cause the humidity outside was extremely high :) - The beds was comfy - The parking lot was near to the flat - There was two swimming pools, one on our level with SPA and one with salt water on the sea level. - The bar and the restaurant prepares typical Italian cuisines - At the end, but not last, the staff was so friendly and polite

We had a wonderful stay at Gabbiano, it surpassed our expectations. A beautiful location with stunning beach and amazing pool. It was spacious and felt v private and relaxing despite being a resort. The gardens were immaculate, it felt like being in the Caribbean. Great value for money, especially compared to Sorrento where we’d been before travelling south. A special mention to you waiter Mimmo who looked after us every evening, sharing personal recommendations which didn’t disappoint. A wonderful relaxing 3 days for my husband and three daughters. Thank you.

A lovely large hotel which at first shocks with the many rooms, but is very well located and very comfortable for guests. Clean, large room with a large terrace. The restaurant is on the second floor and has a wonderful view of the pool and the sea. In the evening there is wonderful entertainment with songs and dances for children and adults. There is free parking next to the hotel.

Beautiful city, with lots of bars, restaurants in the centre. Easily reachable from Lamezia Terme or from other cities. Nice beaches around within short train travel. In August, there was soooo many people. Sometimes, couldn't walk on the streets. Beaches are also full, so take a smaller neighbour city/village. We took a full day Lipari islands tour, but the best was Stromboli by night. If you don't have a full day (a bit tiring) just choose a half-day tour to Stromoli.

Reggio Calabria is a beautiful small city with friendly people and lots of resources within the center. Many places of interest, stores, restaurants, and churches can be reached by walking or public transportation. Train travel is very convenient to the beach area. It is recommended that at least some travelers in the group have a beginner level of Italian language skills. The beaches are mostly covered with pebbles. The water is crystal clear but gets very deep within a few meters from the shore in most spots.

Pizzo is very charming city.

Pizzo is very charming city. Very nice central street with a lot of small shops and very nice main square with lot of restaurants. One may choose whatever they need. The evening in Pizzo is very charming, people are out, eating, enjoying time. During our stay we enjoyed rock concert on main square, four different music production by street artists, there was a display of wooden plays and people enjoyed playing. Even violin concert was there. There are lots of steps there, so if you go anywhere (except main square and main street) you go either up or down. But we were looking for it, it was fun. You have to know that beaches are without service, even though there are restaurants quite close. But we chose distant beach and there was literaly only shower. People use their umbrellas and lay on sand. We had no car, but you may use moto-taxi that stands on the main square.

Lamezia Terme is not exactly a hot spot.

Lamezia Terme is not exactly a hot spot. There is not much within walking distance. (Although the Bram Hotel was wonderfully close to the train station and the airport.) There is a dearth of available transport. The first couple of days we did ok with Uber, (although Google directions were terrible and our dirvers got lost a lot.) Because there was a train strike during our stay, we opted to go to the local mall one day. We got there ok with Uber but could not get back to our hotel. (A fifteen minute car ride away.) There was no taxi service either. We had to call the hotel to send someone to pick us up and bring us back. This cost 25 euros. We became so gun shy about going anywhere that we stayed close to the hotel after this. Also, there is virtually no Wifi anywhere, so if you do not want to rack up roaming charges and you are from another country, you had better get a local Sim card for your phone. In all, I would not return to Lamezia Terme.

Having only just sold my apartment in Scalea after 20 wonderful years, I cannot praise Scalea enough. Unfortunately Old Father Time is catching up with me and caused the sale. Scalea is a great town in Calabria with the sea, mountains , shopping centre , several supermarkets, and loads of good restaurants in Scalea itself and the surrounding area. I have found the locals friendly and helpful.

A great place with nice beaches.

A great place with nice beaches. Not overcrowded like Capo Vaticano or Tropea, the sand is white and coarse (sand is actually better in Capo V.). Due to S.D. being located between C.V. and Tropea, it takes only about 20 min by car to get to the beaches and restaurants in the C.V. and Tropea. Sea water is fantastic. I was lucky to spend most of the vacation there.

There is very little in the town itself—basically just one shop and not much else. There are no sidewalks either, so the accommodation can only be reached by walking along the main road. Of course, this is not the accommodation’s fault.
