FAQs about hotels in

Italy’s Best-Kept Secret

Boasting fantastic beach resorts on its 2 coastlines, Calabria forms the toe of the Italian boot. A favourite of Italian holidaymakers, it is in many respects the region that Italy doesn’t want you to know about.

With some of Booking.com’s best Calabria hotels, Tropea has a fabulous beach at the foot of sheer cliffs topped by buildings. Neighbouring Capo Vaticano has beautiful beaches and a craggy coastline, and Scilla is another amazing Tyrhennian coast resort, immortalised in Greek mythology.

Gioia Tauro has an important port, as does Reggio Calabria, the region’s largest city and birthplace of Gianni Versace. It has an excellent archaeological museum housing the Riace bronzes – Greek statues from the 5th century BC. Just north at Villa San Giovanni, trains drive straight onto ferries to Messina in Sicily.

Inland is Aspromonte National Park, one of Calabria’s top tourist sights, while the Pollino National Park is in the north. Its nearest city is Cosenza with a tranquil old town and 13th-century castle. South is Lamezia Terme, site of the region’s main airport, and nearby Catanzaro is the Calabrian capital.

Crotone on the Ionian coast has a long, sandy beach, as does Soverato. Roccella Ionica’s beach is overlooked by a 16th-century castle, and inland Gerace is one of Italy’s best preserved medieval villages.

We came without any prior research of the property, just in last minute decision... and first day was cultural shock :), but at the end of the day we like it so much, because of the quietness of the property, stunning sunsets, beachfront, the storey of the plot, with the highest part being about 60 meters above sea level where was our apartment situated. Also there are a shuttle who moves you up or down if you are not relay on your legs :) - The apartment was well conditioned and dries the air, cause the humidity outside was extremely high :) - The beds was comfy - The parking lot was near to the flat - There was two swimming pools, one on our level with SPA and one with salt water on the sea level. - The bar and the restaurant prepares typical Italian cuisines - At the end, but not last, the staff was so friendly and polite

The stay in the hotel village eden was a trully one of the best holiday experience. The rooms were super clean, quite comfortable bed, we had a kitchen in our house - old but contained everything what was needed, the people working there were super nice&helpful, the restaurant offerd a very tasty, local food. And the ciew was amazing! We had a house up on the hill however it was no problem to us to quickly get to the restaurant and beach as there was a shuttle bus he could grt you on call. The location was also suitable for us (we had a car) and could quickly reach to Tropea eg.

A lovely large hotel which at first shocks with the many rooms, but is very well located and very comfortable for guests. Clean, large room with a large terrace. The restaurant is on the second floor and has a wonderful view of the pool and the sea. In the evening there is wonderful entertainment with songs and dances for children and adults. There is free parking next to the hotel.

I love Reggio Calabria.

I love Reggio Calabria. I think it is under-rated by tourists. At Christmas the Main Street was a marvel, decorated beautifully with lovely tiny twinkling lights everywhere. The stores are beautiful, easily rival larger cities. The Bronzi di Riace in the Museo Nazionale are stunningly beautiful. And the other artefacts perfectly organized and displayed are fascinating. The museum is organized by finds of archeological digs. I have visited Reggio 3 times already and plan to return often.

This was my second one-day visit to Cosenza, and I still haven't had time to fully explore. However, both the historic part and the modern centre are extensive, so are worth more time. I haven't yet explored beyond the old town for restaurants, but there is a good trattoria with friendly service next to the cathedral. (Calabria Bella)

The location in the view was exceptional. Always rent the Stromboli room. You have a corner room so you have three-quarter of view of the ocean and of the church. The breakfast was scrumptious and monica was a gracious, friendly accommodating host the room and the kitchen was spotless and all your amenities were there if I come back to Tropea this is where I’ll stay.

Camiglatello is a livable place to stay where retail and restaurants are almost open all week. Do not rely on skiing area as if there is no snow, it would not be possible. However, travelling by car, there is always somewhere interesting to vist, and the food is great. The beautiful lakes (Ampollino and Argo) in the area are also worth visiting, as they do contrast with each other in what they offer.

Rende, which is really a part of the long thin city of Cosenza, is not a pretty place. Cosenza, as I have said many times before, suffers from large amounts of rubbish strewn everywhere, from paper, bottles and cans, to broken baby carriages, old bicycles, broken glass and split-open rubbish sacks containing.....(I'll leave it to your imagination!). The best thing to do, and my tactics always, is to find a nice hotel or lodging and then stay in it till it's time to leave tomorrow after breakfast.

Reggio Calabria was the best city of 5 cities I visited in italy during my stay. And my one week stay at reggio calabria. was to short . Next time I visiting I will stay at least 14 days to be able to see and explore the city. - There is one thing that I will recommend any and all visitors to italy make shore to agree with the taxi driver about a price before you using a taxi at any airport or railways station in italy. Otherwise , They will charge you at least three times the price for the taxi trip.
