An amazing 4-star hotel located just next to the shoreline, and all rooms have a view of the beautiful Lake Biwa. Right next to parklands and Nagahama castle, and 5 mins from the city centre and old town market street. Staff is always really helpful and polite, the room was impeccably clean, and there is also free parking. If the hotel would have been located in Europe, a room would probably have costed twice as much as it normally does at Kitabiwako Hotel Grazie, and if you travel during the rainy season or similar, you can get a room for as little as £50, which is astonishing! The hotel also got an Italian restaurant, which I can strongly recommend, because it serves proper Italian cuisine to a reasonable price; normally, when something is advertised as Italian food in Japan it is either something that would make an Italian person cry (and not of joy), or you got yourself a proper but exclusive Italian eating place in Tokyo or Osaka that serves delicious food to a very high price and only to the select few. It is rare to get something that is proper Italian in Japan and 1) outside the big cities, and 2) will not ruin you for a simple meal. You know, if you want to take a short break from all the sushi and ramen...

We had a wonderful time at Yuzanso! The hotel is a bit isolated, so for us, it was a very welcomed escape from the city noise. The staff were incredibly nice and friendly. The facilities were great - we tried the public baths and the private outdoor bath, both very relaxing. We had a huge room with an amazing view of the lake Biwa. Delicious and very filling breakfast, but the best part was the dinner - so much attention to detail, a beautiful presentation, and delicious food - It was incredible. I would definitely recommend this place for those who are looking for a tranquil and relaxing japanese experience.

The street the hotel is in is beautiful. There's lots to see and do nearby. You can go to the lake. There's a couple of really amazing cafés and restaurants nearby. The locals really want you to try and spend time in their town competing with Kyoto can't be easy, but it's well worth spending a day exploring Otsu.

Hikone is mostly a student town with the castle, and close to the largest lake - Lake Biwa. The sports complex is pretty nice and cool too. I recommend coming here during Sakura for the castle or even snow fall. 1-2 days is enough for a stop for sure.

Beautiful town, loved the shops, quiet places. Had dinner at a wonderful little place with great noodles in soup, gracious chef. There were no places for early breakfast, so ultimately went to the train station which was out of our way and found a place that opened at 9am.

We were cycling around Lake Biwa and I was deciding between to stop overnight in Makino or Takashima. The area is very windy and somehow there was a lot of cars passing this street where the accommodation is located. There is no convenient store, 2 restaurants nearby and a local sake brewery. There wasn’t much to walk around for us. The accommodation is fantastic, we couldn’t ask for more.

Moriyama sits on Lake Biwa with great access to both east and west side, across the Biwako Ohashi bridge. Though Moriyama itself is very urbanized, there are many traditional villages surrounding the town such as Omihachiman. Overall, the Lake Biwa area is severely underrated and tourists should definitely consider to go!

A quiet little town, a great place to visit to avoid the crowds of tourists. Make sure to take the rope-way to the top of Mount Hachiman for a breathtaking view of Lake Biwa and the surrounding area. Also a good place to try out the local Omi beef, one of Japan's top quality wagyu beef brands.

Maibara is a great 'gateway' location for basecamp if you're exploring Kansai [ie less expensive lodging than staying in Kyoto or Osaka] utilizing the shinkansen. If you're a first-timer in Japan and hoping to hit scenic historic sites, you should especially consider it; access to Nagahama Castle and Hikone Castle is super easy [and both are off-the-beaten path where foreign tourists are concerned [if you're at either mid-week, even in 'high' season (ie cherry blossom or autumn leaf viewing), you'll like encounter few foreign tourists], but quick walks from main local JR stations] *Photos attached are @ Hikone Castle, 1 station south of Maibara station; about a 10 minute walk from Hikone Station]

Enjoy the 1st day in Kyoto.

Enjoy the 1st day in Kyoto. Do the Hop On Hop Off bus (both Blue and Red Lines), which stops at all the major sites. Then train to Otsu for relaxing stay at Lake Biwa. Go on a sightseeing / luncheon cruise or organised trips - example the cable car at Sakamoto. Plenty of places to eat including 36th floor of Lake Biwa Otsu Princess Hotel with great views.

Hikone is a pleasant place, but not one you should plan a trip around. Possibly best for a day trip. The atmosphere and climate is reminiscent of small cities in New England. The lake is pleasant, but if you're interested in kayaking you should try towns on the western shore of the lake, even though they're more expensive resort towns. Hikone castle is obviously the reason to come here, but there are a few nice local restaurants as well. Other than that, it's mostly auto shops and people revving the engines of their souped-up cars every night.

Nagahama is great place for renting a bike and cycling around. We got e-bikes from rent place near station. Museums are good - take the Nagahama museum pass for 2 days. Shops, boutiques and restaurants are open around 11-16. No much hope to find any place where to dinner in the evening. Luckily there is a grocery shop in Station, and they have good sushi, onigiri and gyoza selection. For breakfast there is 1 cafe in the station, and very lovely Sheep cafe (opens at 11, fluffy pancakes and cafe to eat in). Anegawa onsen was very good as we were in Nagahama when it was very cold outside.
