- From $371.15 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.9Excellent - What previous guests thought, 181 reviewsI was originally interested in this hotel because I read that the Onsen had a Museum full of Kishio Suga's work. I had been following this amazing Japanese artist for a number of years... so that fact was a deciding factor for me. But, the Onsen, the staff, the care that we felt they put into everything they did, the atmosphere of the place, the gardens also designed by Kishio Suga, the delightful guests we had the pleasure of meeting, our room and the food we were served - and let's not forget the tour of the museum! - made me love this place. Itamuro Onsen Daikokuya has history. Someone told us that the Onsen was 500 years old. Most of the Japanese guests we met there went to purely relax. The kind and capable staff take amazing care of all the guests: A Japanese friend in Tokyo told me I should celebrate the Winter Solstice while I was in Nasushiobara. She explained that on that one day, it had always been traditionally celebrated by putting YUZU fruit in Japanese baths and eating something made of pumpkin. I asked the hotel about all this. I really don't think it was part of their plan... but, they did it all: the YUZU in the baths and the specially prepared Pumpkin desserts. It was all to please us, their guests, and make sure our stay was perfect. I was so grateful and felt so pampered and happy. I enjoyed that fruit in the Japanese bath more than you can imagine. So, If you want to relax in a beautiful Onsen with history, go see great art at the. Suga museum, to have a beautiful experience, and be pampered in a very Japanese sort of way...you must come to Itamuro Onsen Daikokuya.Guest review byLILIANAUnited States
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.4Very Good - What previous guests thought, 387 reviewsThis was one of my very best stays in Japan. Reaching the place is easy, as the bus stops right next to it (Nikko pass is essential for this purpose, since the bus trip would otherwise cost a fortune!). The place is secluded, especially in winter. If you're after tranquility and mountains, this is the place. The resort restaurant serves its own breakfast and dinner - quite expensive, but this is a four-star hotel, and the quality of the food (and the service) is superb. For cheaper options, one may need to take the bus to the next bigger places. This property has two onsen pools: one indoor and one outdoor, both great. In the evening, there’s fire in the lounge fireplace, adding a very rustic feeling to the whole thing. We certainly enjoyed it. Overall, this is not a cheap place at all, but the quality was outstanding, and we loved every moment of the stay (except the morning we had to leave).Guest review byAurelijusTaiwan
- From $267.22 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.7Excellent - What previous guests thought, 212 reviewsA solid and unexpectedly wonderful Ryokan hotel. The staff were completely on point and everything looks immaculately clean, modern, and well-kept. I was really blown away by the size of the room, probably the biggest I’ve seen in all of Japan! The Obachan who makes the onigiri is an absolute delight. The way she interacted with the young children was just so sweet and heartfelt! Ingredients listings on all the foods was also super helpful to avoid activating my shellfish allergy. Also - buffet carts?! Genius!Guest review byDaneUnited States

There are a number of onsen to choose from. Outdoor onsen is great. Provision to reserve a private onsen is a good point. Good selection of food for the buffet dinner and buffet breakfast.Guest review byKristinaJapan

We liked the room it was quite spacious. It was clean and the bed was comfortable. The hotel was an easy bus ride from the main station and there were many restaurants nearby. The breakfast offered a lot options both Japanese and Western. The staff were very helpful finding some bus information and lending us umbrellas and adaptors.Guest review bySusanAustralia - 6.0
Nasu is well known and loved by Japanese people.
Nasu is well known and loved by Japanese people. The Emperor has a summer house here as it tends to be cooler in summer. It’s little known by westerners and therefore is not catered to westerners. Parts of Nasu are very beautiful and other parts are set up for families - eg the zoo and the Dairy farm. There are some lovely restaurants and places to visit here but you really need a car to do it.Guest review byDeltaBegaAustralia - 8.0
The best thing about Nasushiobara is the hot springs.
The best thing about Nasushiobara is the hot springs. It has the Shiobara hot spring village, which has a rich spring quality and has been loved by royalty and literary masters. You can enjoy the traditional hot springs surrounded by nature in spite of the easy access from Tokyo on the Tohoku Shinkansen, which is just an hour away from Tokyo. Each hot spring in the city is different in scale and taste, but it is an adult resort where you can spend your luxurious time by soaking in the hot spring to your heart’s content.Guest review byBestUnited Kingdom - 10.0
This quiet gem is worth the trip!
This quiet gem is worth the trip! It’s a one hour bus ride on a very clean bus to arrive from the airport to a train station connection. There is so much rich history here, beautiful things to see and wonderful food to discover! Home to the oldest school and strongest shogun clan. Samurai parade in February if you can handle the cold. 10/10 come visit Ashikaga!Guest review byScalero - 8.0

The Nasu Kaido is a famous and really scenic road that goes from the lowlands of Nasu town all the way up to the Nasu mountains, and it's beautiful to drive up - if you have a car. The road is a two lane highway that (in Summer) is very busy and not intended for bicycle or pedestrian use when you get to the uphill portions of the road, so be sure to use a vehicle or public transportation if you want to go further up it. The public transportation options are present - you can take the Shinkansen to NasuShiobara Station, then take the bus to the Nasu Mountain Ropeway, then take the ropeway to the near top of one of the mountain peaks and hike from there. It's a good venture, though if you try it on the weekend, be sure to check when the last buses operate, or else you might have to take a taxi.Guest review byLeeUnited States - 10.0

Ashikaga was a great place to visit, as everything was really interesting and nothing felt trivial. It had just the right amount of stuff. The famous flower gardens of course, but also the Bannoji temple, first school, and the surrounding hills/mountains (if you like hiking). It is really easy to get around the area as well.Guest review byMitchell
