Another stay in the Strandhotel Buren another top stay. We have been several times here, and every time we enjoy it as much. This time on top, we did stay in the suite which was newly renovated. Whole room was smelling like a wood. Amazing. Full equipment kitchen. Lovely breakfast. There is not 1 thing I can complain about We will definitely come back.

Absolutely delighted with our room (especially as we got an upgrade) on our return to this beautiful hotel and we wouldn't stay anywhere else if we come back to Ameland. Everything both super modern and really cosy. Reception super helpful and staff endlessly kind even at this very busy time. Coffee, tea and biscuits available at no extra charge in a part of the restaurant you can use as a lounge all day (we got into a routine of going for a wet/rainy bike ride, having a bath, then playing a board game in this nice communal space).

We loved the canals and restaurants in this very pretty town. We had excellent breakfasts overlooking the canal at Fire Restaurant. We also loved the Ceramics museum, which had a very good collection. We particularly liked the Art Nouveaux and Art Deco ceramics. The Fries Museum was also good.

I recently spent four days in Oost-Vlieland and it was a fantastic experience. The accommodation was comfortable, clean, and centrally located, a perfect base for exploring the island. Vlieland is truly a place to unwind. The nature is stunning: wide beaches, peaceful forests, and endless dune trails. Ideal for walking or cycling (tip: rent an e-bike for longer routes!). I’ll definitely be coming back!

Harlingen is a wonderful town, picturesque and full of charming houses, canals and historic places. The people were helpful, friendly and easy going. Surprisingly, the town caters for mostly Dutch tourists, so it was often a challenge to understand the history as there were no signs or explanations in English. The local museum is in Dutch only. But with German and English we were able to get by. The islands across from Harlingen are well worth a visit, the beaches are spectacular, almost deserted and clean. The bird wildlife is plentiful.

Hollum is a beautiful and charming village with a very relaxed island atmosphere. We loved walking through the historic streets, visiting the lighthouse, and enjoying the cozy cafés and local restaurants. The surroundings are perfect for cycling and nature trips. The only small downside is that some places have limited opening hours outside the high season, so planning ahead helps. Overall, a wonderful destination and we would happily return!

We have visited Lemmer many times over the years and are happy to find many of the same restaurants and bars still going (especially after Covid). It is a vibrant, friendly town, based around the Ijsselmeer and canals, many boats of all shapes and sizes. We didn't swim in the Ijsselmeer (it was May, and bear in mind it used to be part of the North Sea!) Lots to see and do round about, though our holiday was mainly based around fishing (myself, with some success) and reading in a lounger (my wife).

Sneek had a lot of beautiful buildings. The construction was a bit confusing for cycling. We walked in the downtown which we thoroughly enjoyed. We really liked the old Distillery that we found fascinating where the owner was so informative and we were able to taste a variety of liqueurs & whiskeys. The Walrus restaurant downtown was excellent that was recommended by locals.

The island is quiet and unspoilt, with little traffic (most cars aren't allowed). Most places can be easily reached by bicycle, and these are easy to hire and of good quality. Although there are restaurants and bars, these are not the island's highlights. There is only one supermarket on the island, but it does seem to have most things. The ferry service is slow and infrequent - careful planning in advance is recommended. The cafeteria on the ferry is surprisingly good, although it only does drinks and snacks.

An interesting place to visit.

An interesting place to visit. I found the free exhibition at the Historisch Centrum Leeuwarden, very near to the Oldehove leaning tower extremely informative, with an excellent again free, audio guide. There are great rail connections to Groningen and Harlingen. I found the national rail NS app excellent for obtaining timetables and e-tickets. Grab a free city guide, they come in a variety of languages. Many walking tours are advertised at the Visitor Centre. The city centre isn't very big and easy to access, but beware of bike!!!. It prides itself on history and shopping. Check out the Walrus Cafe for reasonably priced food and drink.

Nes is a cosy, historical village, not cheap, but not very expensive either. It is the harbor village located almost in the middle of Ameland and therefore perfect for day trips to either direction. The restaurants are good quality, so is the ice-cream, the vegetables and everything else you can buy. There is a great supermarket called Jumbo on the main road from the ferry. If you want to go for hikes, nature with lots of birds, deer and wild rabbits are just a short walk away. The Amelanders love their horses, and they are everywhere.
