Wonderful stay in a beautiful hotel. Diego and his wife took care of every single detail to make our stay even more enjoyable. And the cappuccino I must say is better than in Italy...!

We absolutely loved our stay at Trail’s End! The rooms are great: clean, tidy, large bathrooms, cozy beds. We both rented bikes and In the morning after our first night Pieter showed us a few wonderful biking trails. There are different levels of trails so there is something to do for everyone. We were also able to join for the train race in the weekend with Mike and Luke - an absolute must do if you enjoy biking! A fun addition was the tour in the biking museum which has been set up with great care and an eye for detail: for us it was nice to have some insights in the South African bicycle heroes. Trail’s end is also a great basis for tasting the wines of Elgin, we would highly recommend going to Oak valley and Paul Clüver (check if you need any reservations). Trail’s End is very “bruisend” (bubbly) as we say in Dutch. Many guests enjoy the shared area with or without kids - which for us (as we enjoy some livelihood) was quite nice. In the evening it is highly recommended to try the lovely dishes from the chef (try the hake if you enjoy fish and Malva Cake or brownie for the sweet tooth) and several great wines / beers / other drinks can be ordered at the bar. There is enough space for everyone to enjoy the great atmosphere and relax and read a book, play some games or watch soccer on the big screen tv. What worked well for us was that there is a quiet time from 22:00 - as everyone also wakes up early to go biking, hiking or do other activities. Lastly but not the least important: the staff is superfriendly, it is visible everyone enjoys working there and this gives a great energy to Trail’s End. Overall a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy some challenging mountain bike trails, good wine and laughs with other guests & staff. Unfortunately we don’t live in South Africa but next time we visit we will definitely come back to Trail’s End.

This little gem didn’t stand out from the street, but once we settled in, we found it to be a real treat - everything we imagined we would need were already there - from bottled water to snacks and yoghurt - “just in case you want to do a morning hike”. Our hosts were such friendly angels, and took super good care of us. Not to mention the lovely garden and the convenience of walking everywhere from the house. We will definitely come back!

This was my second stay here, this time just for one night with my mom. The pull-out couch was surprisingly comfortable, and we loved waking up to the sound of birds chirping. The setting is so peaceful, and having our morning coffee while looking out at the mountains was a real highlight. The kitchen was well-equipped with everything we needed, and the place was spotless. Always an enjoyable experience staying here. We’ll definitely be back!

This review is for the River Cabin: Lea is a wonderful host who made us feel at home instantly. The River Cabin is as described. It is simple and rustic but has everything you need. My partner and I loved it. It is very peaceful. We enjoyed watching the horses from the neighboring farm. In the evening the bats fly around (keep your window's closed when you don't want them inside). Lea provided fans, which were needed as we stayed during a hot week. Next door is a animal encounter farm with rescue animals. So you can hear lions roar at night. You can also book a guided tour with them, which we recommend. The farm has a big nature reserve where you can go for walks and swim in the dam. If you are lucky some wild Zebras will be grassing near the dam (especially late afternoon). To get to the farm you will have to drive on a dirt road. The river was easy to cross (we stayed during the hot season, so the river barely had any water). Botriver is a small town with a really nice pub at the train station.

We stayed in a room above the brewery and it was delighful. Charming with a vintage feel and a nice old village style. The room was spacious, clean and pretty quiet (even if it faces the street). Stopping in Greyton during our road trip was a great idea, the town is quaint and the restaurants and shops are all so pretty. The Old Potters Inn waa the perfect spot to spend the night and enjoy a good beer, walk around and visit the Saturday morning market!

Betty’s Bay is a lovely, safe area and a great place to relax. The area has a good choice of restaurants, cafes and some small supermarkets, including the excellent deli at the Lemon & Lime cafe. We recommend a visit to Harold Porter Gardens and Stony Point to see the endangered African Penguins, Rock Hyrax or Dassies as they are locally known, and 4 different types of Cormorant. Unbelievably, the small Rock Hyrax are the nearest relatives to elephants. The beaches are lovely and great for a walk and the sea was warm enough to go in (February). You might sometimes see baboons wondering around Betty’s Bay, but they are quickly moved on by Wardens so don’t bother you but are great to watch.

For visiting the hot springs it is good, however it is expensive and you are better off staying in an Air BnB near by and visiting the springs in the day time. Bedrooms lack privacy and are prone to noise from the outside and neighbouring rooms well into the evening.

It is a very peaceful village with a lovely beach. I was there off season which was perfect as coming in summer must be hectic. Met very helpful people from the pharmacy, the small supermarket and the laundry lady. Excellent restaurant - The Cork Eatery! Very nice owner and very good food. Enjoyed a lovely meal. Beach is beautiful but I may have gone to the wrong entrance as a bit of a trek to the sea but well worth it. Big plus - pet friendly area.

Must visit is Keer-Veer restaurant on the Wildekrans wine estate. The food was absolutely delicious, and you could watch the chef put his masterpieces together. The food was a taste explosion. Husband and wife combo, our hostess was very friendly. Beautifully put together restaurant. The complementary breadbasket must be the tastiest bread I've ever eaten. Beaumont family wine farm, we visited the restaurant on the farm called Zest, breakfast was scrumptious. It is truly a family run establishment. Staff were all friendly. The wine hostess was excellent and knew her subject very well. Wines are divine. Gabrielskloof beautiful estate, did lunch at the restaurant The Kitchen Door, food was good, with a twist on tastes. You can eat on the patio and wine taste or have larger meals in the restaurant. Easy drive to Hangklip from Botriver, Hangklip beaches has the whitest softest sand, I have ever seen or felt beneath my feet. We also drove through Betty's Bay, very scenic drive. Easy drive to Hermanus had stunning lunch at La Pentola. A must eat is the lobster and oysters.

There is not a hell of a lot to do for Families in Elgin. Lots of tasting room visits and a visit to the railway market. We did go for lunch at Hickville Smoke House, that was great, and they were pet-friendly. Not all the wine farms are pet-friendly. A lot of places are not open when their website says they are.

We went to a few that was closed but we're still allowed to enter and take pics. All the staff at the various winefarms could suggest to us where to get the full experience on the Monday. The hostess at Paul Cluver wine tasting was so well informed and professional. People love what the do. Very good experience all round

I can’t recommend this property enough. Great communication from our hosts, we were met by Gail who showed us around and said to contact her if we need anything. She even brought over a home made apple crumble! The house and grounds are so beautiful I’ve honestly never stayed anywhere so well maintained, clean and with so much space and incredible facilities. We enjoyed lovely outdoor dining, lounging by the pool, hot tub and fire pit in the evening. The meditation studio and games room are also amazing additions, you really do need a few days to enjoy the extent of it all. But mostly the view is magnificent. What a gem, we will definitely be back! 5 STARS!!!!

Rooi Els is a tiny, out-of-the-way-, upmarket holiday village in the beautiful Overstrand. Only one hour from Cape Town International airport, the Cape winelands, and the beautiful town of Hermanus. Surrounded by the incredible natural beauty of the Cape fold mountains and the Cape Fynbos vegetation.. A surprising number of excellent restaurants in both Rooi Els and the nearby Pringle Bay.
