The Glory of the Roman Empire
With arguably the most impressive Roman heritage outside Rome, Nîmes is truly a sight to behold. Its most awe-inspiring structure is the virtually intact Roman amphitheatre. The gladiators are long gone, but a matador statue outside gives an idea of its current use, which is most celebrated during the annual Feria.
Another amazing Roman monument is the Maison Carrée, a colonnaded temple. The Temple of Diana is less well preserved, but still maintains some of its arched roof and interior details. The peaceful, surrounding Fontaine Gardens cover the grounds of the former Roman baths and still contain elegant water features.
Also water-related is the incredible Pont du Gard, a triple-arched Roman aqueduct across a river north-east of Nîmes. Other Roman remains include the Tour Magne, and 2 gates that allowed access through the city walls.
The Nîmes Archaeological Museum in the former Jesuit college provides background to this history and also houses the Warrior of Grezan, a pre-Roman statue. Another museum houses a fine art collection, and the simple cathedral is also worth visiting.
In addition to plenty of restaurants and bars, Nîmes has a good range of accommodation. Booking.com’s options include luxury hotels by Parc Expo Nimes, and cheap apartments near the train station, all easily accessible from Nîmes-Alès-Camargue-Cévennes Airport.

Nîmes és una ciutat preciosa, amb monuments impressionants i passejades úniques. Se'ns va fer justa la visita de només un dia, però havíem d'anar a altres ciutats. Tenen uns jardins preciosos, amb un temple romà al seu interior, i un amfiteatre enorme molt ben conservat. En general hi ha 3 monuments on s'ha de pagar entrada i en qualsevol d'ells tens l'opció de comprar un forfait que t'inclou les 3 visites per molt poc més del preu de només un dels monuments, així que val la pena. Vam menjar molt bé en un restaurant que es deia Le Cafe Olive. Tot el personal súper amable i atent, i el menjar senzill però deliciós, així que per dinar-hi amb nens i adolescents, immillorable, tant per tracte com per qualitat. No es el primer cop que hem anat a Nimes, la zona de La Camarga i La Provença ens agrada molt. Nimes la fem servir com a base per anar a altres llocs també. Ens interessa sobre tot per las ruinas romanas i tota la zona está plena.

Ciutat petita, de seguida te la fas teva. És interessant i autèntica sense ser excessivament turística. És molt agradable passejar-hi. Molt recomanable el museu de l’època romana, el millor que mai je vist, i un amfiteatre romà molt ben conservat.LauraEspanya
