Yogyakarta represents the Javanese quintessence, the guardian of the island’s traditions, language, culture and arts. Capital of kingdoms and empires since the 8th century, ‘Yogya’ is today the capital of the namesake Sultanate and Special Region of Indonesia.
With ancient origins, the city was during centuries the capital of the Mataram Kingdom, but its power was weakened when the Dutch East India Company started to gain control over the small Javanese kingdoms during the 17th century. After World War II, the Indonesian independence was supported by the Sultan, allowing the monarchy to stay in power. The city became the country’s first capital from 1945 to 1949.
Its name was inspired by the Indian Ramayana epic, with ‘Yogya’ meaning 'suitable, fit’ and ‘karta’ meaning 'prosperous'. Must-see sites include the Kraton Yogyakarta Palace, the Taman Sari Castle, the Alun-Alun Sultan's ground, and the Masjid Gede Kauman Mosque. Jalan Malioboro street is one of the most popular shopping areas, and many hotels in Yogyakarta are located nearby.

Yogyakarta provides an interesting place for first time visitor to Java with The world class sites of Borobodur and Pranbanan close by. Local food is readily available and well priced. Tourist are welcome, but tourism does not dominate The local culture. transport via Grab and Gojek is convenient and cheap and the airport train is easy. The real draw of Yogyakarta are the two temple complexes of Bodorburu and Prambanan. They’re outstanding but both are outside/at the edge of the city in the north. Yogyakarta itself is quite nuts. Busy, congested, noisy - with mopeds everywhere - like a lot of Java. Marlboro street in the week is fun but was mobbed at the weekend. Yogyakarta is one of the city I liked the most in Java Island because of it's architecture, historical monument, city life, the amazing surrounding, lots of activities to do around and in the city. The most popular attractions are close to the city so you can chose to rent a motorbike and do it by yourself, option we did and that give us a lot of freedom (a bit more tired too 😆) or by booking a tour very easily. Totally recommend to spend minimum 3 days here. Tips: all the big cities in Java aren't made for pedestrians, so I definitely recommend to rent a motorbike or using the app Grab (= indonesian uber)MarineFrance - Scored 4.04.0

Outside the city, visiting the Borobudur Temple and the Prambanan Temple was so interesting to see. But I found Yogyakarta itself very dirty, I was tired of people trying out scams on me and there wasn't much that I found of interest. I was very disappointed as I had heard years ago that it was a centre of art, dance and music. What was great was a Korean restaurant that I discovered. I ate there several times.Reilly - Scored 1010

I have stayed in Yogyakarta many times and have visited most of the main tourist attractions. First time visitors may wish to visit Malioboro Street and take a 'dokar' ride (horse and carriage) or becak ride (tricycle rickshaw) to the Taman Sari (old Sultan's water palace and former bathing pools for his harem) and the Kraton (the seat of the reigning Sultan of Yogyakarta). In addition, a trip to the Prambanan temple and grounds, located on the north-eastern side of town, is impressive and, if time permits, a visit to the world famous Borobudur Buddhist Temple (a 2 hour drive north of the city) is well worth the trip. There are many other cultural treats in 'Yogya' and a complete variety of food offered in good restaurants or in local street stalls. Also, a trip to the lower slopes of Mount Merapi (active volcano) is possible by organised tour, or take a taxi to where the locals run Jeep tours around the middle slopes.BodskiAustralia
