A small and beautiful city. There are lots of nice small restaurants providing authentic local food, which is fresh and tastes so good. People here are very nice! If you need to rent a car, make sure you have international driving permit. Otherwise you are not allowed to rent a car. Taroko national park is a must visit attraction . The Taroko Gorge was quite a site to behold. We had a private TourGuide, Allen, who was full of great historical knowledge not only of Taiwan, but of the Taroko people. Hualien is easily accessible by train from small or major cities, either with the express or local trains. It is also a great starting point to discover the central east cost, with wonders like Taroko gorge and Walami trail. In the city, the Dongdamen night market is worth spending a few evenings.

The city itself is big and need time to explore. The coastal park facing the Pacific Ocean is highly recommended to visit. Also the Taroko Gorge tour is a must together with the many other sightseeing tours.
