The lungs of Borneo, rich in natural resources, a city where the river flows, and home to the indigenous Dayak tribe. These are just a few things we know East Kalimantan for. A province in Indonesia that could soon become the Indonesia’s future administrative capital—The New Awakening of Nusantara (the locals call it IKN, Ibu Kota Negara). The name of the future capital means “archipelago” in Javanese. It will be based in Sepaku, within the regions of North Penajam Paser and Kutai Kartanegara.

Actually there are several interesting places you can...
Actually there are several interesting places you can explore around Balikpapan such as Bengkirai Hills, Sun bear conservations and another places, but it will require you to rent a car or take a taxi since it quite far from Balikpapan. Public transport to that mentioned place seems not available at the moment.
But.. if you want to rely with public transportation, the city centre itself is quite good and has some places to explore. It's also more organized and cleaner compared with the nearby East Kalimantan capital, Samarinda. For the local "angkot"(mini non-airconditioned van) i saw this also more organized and easier to understand it's route compared with similar transportation in Java. At least there are two popular beach in Balikpapan (Kemala beach and Manggar beach) accessible by this public transport. Always note that the "angkot" frequency may severely reduced after sunset!
Alternatively, you can always try using Online Taxi and Online "Ojek"(Motorcycle taxi) apps such like Go-Jek and Grab. It's faster and more convenient, but might quite costly. Outside city centre, you might have a hard time finding a driver especially at night. If you're staying outside city centre (like near Airport) and planning to have a dinner in city centre, better go there before sunset and stay around until night, then return to your hotel from city centre which you can got online taxi/ojek driver easier.
In addition to destinations, you may want to try signature dishes from Balikpapan, the crab dishes. Other than that, there are a lot of dining places around, especially near the city centre around the coastline.
From check in to check out, our stay was absolutely delightful. The room was spacious and clean, and we had a lovely view of the pool. (Please note: the central pool belongs to the private apartments, not the hotel. The hotel's pool is upstairs and is rectangular, still a good size for some relaxing laps) Breakfast was really nicely laid out and had plenty of options for people who wanted continental and for those who wanted something more local and traditional.
. Across from the great amll with many inexpensive dinner options. Traditional Indonesian breakfast was very yummy. Many hotel guests were young mine workers on their days off. They were all excedingly clean, polite and quiet. We saw no other foreigners while staying for 4 nights. The hotel staff was very helpful with limited english, but always better than my Indonesian. We would ckoose this again.
I love the Blue Sky Mantao very much. When I had my breakfast, I soon discovered how delicious and amazing the Mantao was, especially when is taken with the beef. Omg. It was amazingly delicious. Hotel normally serve mediocre food but this was outstanding. You have to try this. I even mentioned this on my travel blog via https://danielhyng.com/new-awakening-of-nusantara-indonesias-future-capital/
We had a wonderful experience at the hotel. The rooms were clean, very comfortable, and the staff was amazing. They went over and beyond to help make our stay enjoyable. If you meet someone with the name like Kadek, Dewi, Iwan, Eka or Jumsia on their badge, be sure that you will get the great service exceptional as well. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone visiting Balikpapan.
Breakfast was excellent, plenty of choice from traditional to western. My kids loved the menu. Room was comfy and clean, staff were plenty friendly and helpful. In addition to the swimming pool, the hotel had a choice of badminton court, table tennis and a play area too, all of which could keep your family busy. My kid especially loved it that he got to learn to play table tennis.
On top of a big shopping mall, so it's very convenient. A good place to stay to enjoy the mall. We got 1 hour extra checkout time. We are allowed to park just at the hotel's entrance, although we need to move it due to the heat. I don't think there is valet service for hotel guests. Breakfast was pretty good with many varieties.
The hotel is unique. It has comfortable rooms with big windows, clean air, and wind blowing into the room, however, at the back of the hotel, it has an annex with an aluminum roof. When the rain comes, the noise is so terrible.
The hotel is near to downtoan,i can easily go to the mall by walking,
The receptionist gave us early check in which is very good bcoz we traveled for 7 hours so we need really good rest
