Mérida was founded as Augusta Emerita in 25 BC, the capital of the ancient Roman province of Lusitania. Located almost half-way between Madrid and Lisbon, it is nowadays an important historic centre, and the capital of the Spanish region of Extremadura. The ‘Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The city was founded in order to protect the Guadiana River pass, becoming the largest city on the Iberian Peninsula. Visigoths, Moors, the Christian ‘reconquista’, and the Napoleonic invasion left their mark too, and the city is nowadays home to the most complete Roman remains in Spain.
Its historic centre displays a mix of all these cultures, with the Roman Theatre and the Roman Bridge standing out. The Alcazaba is the old fortress of Roman origin, successively rebuilt by Visigoths and Moors. Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque buildings, as well as typical cobbled streets complete the picture.
