Jasmac Plaza Hotel

Susukino, Sapporo

Guests of Hotel Jasmac Plaza can relax in the yukata cotton robe while watching satellite TV. Each room includes a refrigerator and electric kettle with Japanese tea.

Relaxation is easy with Jasmac Plaza’s spacious public hot spring baths, jacuzzi and sauna. I lived in Japan for a number of years as a younger man, and have traveled quite extensively throughout the country. Short of the $500/night luxury ryokans in onsen towns, this was the most enjoyable hotel I've stayed in. The onsen is absolutely fabulous, there are loungers with drink service where you can kick back (in my case, with a nice cigar and sake) and the location is absolutely superb--right in the middle of Susukino, where all the action is. There were not many English language reviews of this hotel as Jasmac definitely does not cater to foreign guests, the way Mystays or Toyoko or Route-Inn generally do. For that reason, travelers with no Japanese skills may have trouble here. One thing that nobody pointed out previously and I had to figure out on my own was the onsen protocol. For those of you willing to brave this hotel for the fabulous amenities, read this well and carefully. When checking in, all guests will receive two important things: your room key, and a rubber wristband with your room number on it. That wristband is to be worn any time you utilize the onsen as it 1) identifies you as a guest (non guests have to pay a hefty fee to use the facilities) and it's also used to secure your valuables (room/locker keys) while you use the baths as there are NO LOCKERS in the locker room. When you get to the onsen floor, you take off your footwear, to go the lockers and lock your sandals up. Take that key, along with your room key, and GIVE IT TO THE STAFF at the front desk outside the baths. They will secure it for you. When you are finished bathing, go back to that counter, show them your rubber wristband and they'll retrieve your keys for you. And with that taken care of, ENJOY THE ONSEN. The set-up is amazing, particularly the outdoor rotenburo. Sitting in the 42C water while the temperatures are about 25F with snow falling around you...it doesn't get any better.
