About Punta Cana

Including tips for the best time to visit Punta Cana

As far as Caribbean beach destinations go, few are more dreamy than Punta Cana. The easternmost spot of the Dominican Republic is one of the region’s most famous resort towns renowned for its gorgeous selection of white-sand beaches.

Beaches are the biggest attraction in Punta Cana, and for good reason. The main beach, Macao Beach, is a picturesque stretch of white sand lined by tall palm trees and is popular with surfers. Elsewhere, Bavaro Beach is ideal for snorkelling and offers plenty of great diving spots. If you’re looking for something more secluded, check out Palmilla Beach on Saona Island just off the coast. This untouched island is part of East National Park and is known for its mangroves, coral reefs and wildlife.

There are plenty of exciting things to do and see in Punta Cana. Check out ChocMuseo, a museum and factory where you can learn how chocolate is made, from the cacao beans to the delicately wrapped bar. At night, head straight for Coco Bongo, a vibrant nightclub that knows how to put on a show. Here, trapeze artists, singers, dancers and entertainers perform well into the early hours of the morning.

Seaweed was a big problem and the water wasn't that clear, but if you were able to swim further out , you could get to clear water. The trouble is, there are so many boats, that it's not safe to swim out or they don't want you to. They'd rather charge you for a boat trip. Which leads to the second point, that you can't spend any time on the beach without being pestered for boat trips, shopping, hair braids...etc.... Give me a day off. All the other paid excursions are just more ways to extract more money out of you. Parts of the trips were nice, but any and every opportunity was to sell you more things. Which is just annoying. The whole place is overpriced and overrated. I won't return.

Punta Cana for sure is a place for holidays, it's very much organized around tourism. We had a great time with some of the tours. We booked some private tours, these were better then the group organized ones (typically there's quite some time lost in waiting). The seaweed was a bit of a downside in the Bavaro area, but then when we went to the island (Catalina) there was no issues at all.

Punta Cana is a town for tourists.

August 5, 2022

Punta Cana is a town for tourists. Lots of restaurants, good medical facilities, all types of accomendations as well. Taxi's are expensive and there is a lot of motor-taxis. Use uber, safer and cheaper. Do not use dollars, change your money before hand and use pesos. A standard tip is 50 to 100 pesos.
