About Ischia

Including tips for the best time to visit Ischia

The restorative allure of Ischia, the largest of Italy's islands in the Bay of Naples, can be felt in more ways than one. Far from the air-kissing crowds of Capri, this sunny spit of land offers a calmer, laid-back hideaway in which to escape from the mainland – as well as a clutch of therapeutic spas that have earned it fame. Ischia is also the name of the main port town, split between the commercial harbour district of Ischia Porto and the more historic Ischia Ponte. It's worth spending time in each.

Begin your history lesson in Ischia Ponte, where most of the island's oldest attractions lie. You'll encounter Castello Aragonese on its own islet. Sections of the fortress date back to 474 BCE, and the complex contains multiple chapels and churches within its walls. Look for 14th-century frescoes among the ruins of the Cattedrale dell'Assunta. Near the castle, you'll find Guevara Tower, a turreted former residence overlooking the water and Ischia Porto. Unlike Ischia Ponte, Ischia Porto offers a taste of modern Ischia – come here for the island's best bars, taverns and shops.

After some traditional sightseeing, strike out to experience more of the island's natural pleasures. Soak up the sun on the sands of Spiaggia dei Pescatori, which overlooks the castle. Relax in hot baths surrounded by gardens at the Nitrodi hot springs or Negombo Thermal Park. For more ambitious travellers, a hike up Monte Epomeo – Ischia's highest peak – will grant you sweeping views of the sea.

The island is an hour trip via boat from Naples and well worth the time to get there. We traveled to Ischia to get away and it really gave us a chance to relax. We specifically traveled there to visit the Giardini la Mortella, known as one of the most beautiful private gardens in Italy. It was magnificent. On another day we visited the Castello Aragonese which has a rich history over the past 2500 years. Ischia has charm and friendly people and we plan on returning to this little paradise.

Learn the bus system, its easy and cheap to get around the island. Take a boat tour around the island and definitely visit the castle. Buy your souvenirs in the grocery store not the expensive gift shops.

Brilliant. Definitely coming back I don't drive and was there solo and had a ball. Maybe not quite as walker friendly as i expected - easy to get buses around, but a few times i found google maps lied a bit about walkable paths... It was early May and everything was pretty empty. I liked that, but I suppose some of the larger restaurants and resorts i was recommended had a bit of a ghost town vibe. Could have spent every day at Posiedon spa and been very happy. Make sure you visit.

A perfect location for relaxing trip.

A perfect location for relaxing trip. Nice place, nice peoples and plenty of options to spent your time. We traveled by car and it was a bit expensive to take the ferry, but other options are available to( bus from Napoli). We had the dinner in the restaurant and the lunch at Pizzeria Il Giardino. On our next trip I will stay one week!!

Ischia is lovely and scenic with an ancient history.

Ischia is lovely and scenic with an ancient history. Thermal springs abound all over the island and several spas abound to fir all budgets and needs. The local cuisine is seafood, mostly, the freshest and most varied I’ve ever run across though their best known specialty is a delicious rabbit dish. There are several picturesque historical sights and local vineyards to sample their lovely local wines. This is the second vacation we’ve taken there and look forward to our next! I would recommend the town of Forio, it being 25 minutes by car from the ferry port and central to other sights.
