About Ischia

Including tips for the best time to visit Ischia

The restorative allure of Ischia, the largest of Italy's islands in the Bay of Naples, can be felt in more ways than one. Far from the air-kissing crowds of Capri, this sunny spit of land offers a calmer, laid-back hideaway in which to escape from the mainland – as well as a clutch of therapeutic spas that have earned it fame. Ischia is also the name of the main port town, split between the commercial harbour district of Ischia Porto and the more historic Ischia Ponte. It's worth spending time in each.

Begin your history lesson in Ischia Ponte, where most of the island's oldest attractions lie. You'll encounter Castello Aragonese on its own islet. Sections of the fortress date back to 474 BCE, and the complex contains multiple chapels and churches within its walls. Look for 14th-century frescoes among the ruins of the Cattedrale dell'Assunta. Near the castle, you'll find Guevara Tower, a turreted former residence overlooking the water and Ischia Porto. Unlike Ischia Ponte, Ischia Porto offers a taste of modern Ischia – come here for the island's best bars, taverns and shops.

After some traditional sightseeing, strike out to experience more of the island's natural pleasures. Soak up the sun on the sands of Spiaggia dei Pescatori, which overlooks the castle. Relax in hot baths surrounded by gardens at the Nitrodi hot springs or Negombo Thermal Park. For more ambitious travellers, a hike up Monte Epomeo – Ischia's highest peak – will grant you sweeping views of the sea.

This was a vacation added to the end of a business trip, and after a week of work and then the lengthy cab-ferry-cab-golf cart ride to the hotel, all we wanted to do was rest and relax, which is what we did. That said, there are a lot of different options on the Island and where we stayed wasn't the best for shopping. The hotel had some wonderful artwork on display in the lobby, but it was commissioned on the other side of the island. We just didn't have the time to explore other parts of the island. I would definitely go back and take the time to venture out further, but we had a fantastic respite within walking distance to our hotel.

Ischia has reason to be lauded as the best Island in the world by Travel&Leisure Mag. It has so much more to offer than its more famous neighbor, Capri. More to do and more to so for fewer expenses. Six towns to visit, fabulous beaches (versus zero on Capri), innumerable hot springs spas, deep history, hiking and biking trails, fishing and diving. It has it all. Great foor and local wines in a wide variety of locales, styles and tastes.

It’s a really beautiful and sort of laid back island. Smaller than Capri and simpler. The thermal baths are incredible. The fish is fresh and delicious. I loved this island and want to return with my husband.

I would return again, and use the ferry system to explore nearby islands and villages for day trips. The thermal springs on island far exceeded my expectations. All things considered, it was an ideal holiday for late september and early october: not crowded, lovely weather. Not fluent, or even adept with the Italian language, I found I could navigate ticketing by writing my necessary time schedules and destinations, for assistance. The public bus system can be navigated with the provided maps and schedules. There are taxis everywhere. I would not recommend renting car or scooter.

Very easy to get round the island ...by bus or hired bike / scooter...a plethora of bars, cafes and restaurants...good trekking to be had..in particular up the mountain in the centre of the island.

Beautiful island! Went end of September so avoided crowds. Found the food in restaurants very good and not very expensive at all. Had several beaches to enjoy and lovely views every where you turned.
