Very nice, small village next to a beach and sufficiently uncrowded to make it feel quiet and off the tourist track for the Costa Brava. Conveniently on the train line and food and drink not over priced. Some very nice, challenging walks with spectacular views of the Catalan and French coasts and a history that raises it above your average beach town. Be aware that there is only one supermarket in the town and it closes at 7 most nights.
If you are looking for a small, cozy hostel with a lot of Spanish personality, and a lot of local guests at the bar and the restaurant all day - it's a perfect choice - in - maybe the most beautiful Bordertown in Europe. Portbou is unique. Very small, old, Spanish town - with af small beach - and - surrounded - by the Pyrenees. No matter is you want to go north - towards France - or south - towards Spain - it's uphill the Pyrenees. Hostal Juventus is value for money.
very nice hotel easy to find off the N260 in portbou , close to the beaches and the main railway station Hotel comodoro has old world charm, perhaps a tad old fashioned but part of its appeal Nice size room with french doors leading to a nice terrace with views to the spanish/french border affording nice privacy Nice receptionist/staff breakfast served on the main terrace in front of the hotel , a nice touch and a good continental breakfast
the woman who gave us the key was wonderful and very helpful even though we didn't speak Spanish very well. the apartment was very clean and nice, and was also comfortably for the night. everything was wonderful even though I booked last-minute day-of because my friend and I got stranded in Portbou
Room is small but clean and tidy with all necessities.
It have small fan, TV and sin inside the room.
The only small issue is that it is directly above the noisy pipes from the hotel and area outside.
The staff was friendly, the room clean and it's directly at the beach.
So to be fair, the Hotel is ok, I just would have preffered a hostel or similar.
