Neighborhood info

Plaka is the beloved neighborhood surrounding the Acropolis an arguably Athens’ oldest neighborhood. Because of Greek laws banning amplified music, Plaka has transformed from the groovy seventies nightclub district to a thriving area filled with restaurants, jewelry stores, boutiques, tourist shops, and cafés. It also provides immediate access to all archeological sites both well known and some hidden gems! The famous Tower of the Winds (part of the ancient Roman Agora) is just a block up from Adrianou on Aeolou St! Though quite commercialized, Plaka is the quintessential experience of a village with narrow winding streets where traditional music can be heard around every corner and if you’re lucky, maybe even some magic takes place. There are several museums scattered throughout the area that are worth a visit including the Children's Museum; Music Museum; Greek Folk Art Museum; and Jewish Museum. If you are interested in contemporary art, head over to the Frissiras Museum of Contemporary Greek and European Painting (3 & 7 Monis Asteriou).
