Of all the places I visited in Kyrgyzstan over the last one week, I seem to have developed a certain fondness for Karakol - a picturesque little town surrounded by snow-capped peaks of the Tianshan Mountains, south-east of Lake Issyk-kul. Beyond the natural beauty of the place and its friendly people, what made my visit really special was the familial atmosphere of the lovely homestay, run by Ahmed and Family. Not too far from a supermarket and café, and within walking distance of the city centre, Hillside Karakol is perfectly located in a quiet neighborhood. It has clean, adequately sized rooms with attached bathrooms. The large common dining and kitchen area on the ground floor is a great hangout if you're traveling in a biggish group (we were six). Ahmed helped us order-in delicious food from a restaurant in town for dinner both nights. And then at breakfast, when I tasted their freshly made pancakes with the homemade blackberry and apricot jams, I was immediately hooked even though I'm neither into pancakes nor breakfast in general. We had originally planned to stay a single night but had to extend because of car trouble. Luckily, Ahmed was able to accommodate us at very short notice. He even put us in touch with Kudrat who runs a travel agency (https://g.co/kgs/ktJezZQ) and arranged our journey back to Bishkek that included a couple of sightseeing stops along the south shoreline of the lake. A wonderful experience overall, made all the more easier with Ahmed and Kudrat's grasp over the English language, which meant not having to resort to Google Translate every other second. Adding one suggestion for Ahmed at Hillside Karakol on behalf of a friend from our group - please think of equipping the rooms with some bedside reading light. Thank you again... I'll be back!

Karakol is a small, charming, village-like town located at the foot of the mountains. The views are spectacular, the air is tasty-fresh, the food is diverse and as organic as it gets; most importantly, people are open, welcoming, a little reserved at first, but ready to help once you approach them.
Infrastructure and buildings are decayed, but it only adds to the charm of the town if you are open to go through a little hardship here and there, especially if you are arriving from a megapolis.
Karakol offers a few interesting museums and galleries, but the main attraction is that it is an intermediary place to starting your journey exploring peaks, gorges, vallies, hot springs and all the other natural gems that Kyrgyzstan offers its guests. The town itself has very interesting history and a crazy mix of many ethnic groups (Kyrgyz, Ukrainian, Dungan, Russian, Korean, German, Uzbek, Uyghur, Tatar, etc). Find yourself a local friend (easier to do in Kyrgyzstan) and he/she will open up doors to many other amazing sides of Karakol.

You can easily stay one week or longer in this destination.
You can easily stay one week or longer in this destination. There is everything you may expect from Kyrgyzstan: lake Issyk Kul just a few Km from Karakol, amazing mountains with lost od different treks: one-day or multiple-day. I suggest to definitely climb to Ala Kol lake, visit Teleti valley or go up to the pass, immerse in hot springs in Altyn Arashan, or if you need a modern structure go to Ak-Suu thermal pools. Jeti-Ögüz is a 100% must see, or go to Jargalan valley and admire dozens of semi-wild horses, rent one of them and enjoy the view to the world from horseback. Buy some local hand-made products e.g. shirdak carpets, taste awesome local cuisine (esp. lamb, plov or manty) and don't miss local market in Karakol, wooden Holy Trinity Cathedral, unusual architecture of Dungan mosque or Sunday animal market in the town suburbs.

We stayed in Karakol for 2 nights - before and after our hike to Ala Kol lake. I would recommend bringing camping gear from your home country as the shops in Karakol aren't great. There are companies though that you can rent tents, cooking gear etc. if you prefer. Karakol has few cafes and restaurants (we tried Cat Cafe and Meeting Point) aimed for overseas travelers but also places to try local culinary (unfortunately the highly recommended place was closed for Eid).

The town is very flat and was not what we expected.
The town is very flat and was not what we expected. It had all the things we needed (restaurants, convenience stores, petrol stations) and was easy to get around. The museum was well worth the visit. The cathedral we only saw the garden and outside. It was a lovely unique piece of architecture. The real attractions are the mountain passes and valleys.
This is the nicest and most original hostel I have stayed at in Kyrgyzstan. It is clean, cosy and ideal for backpackers. The tents inside are a great idea and they are really comfortable. The living room / kitchen is a huge space that has everything you need to rest (cosy sofas and armchairs) and cook. The bathrooms are clean and have hot water. The location is good, close to the main attractions in Karakol (Dungan mosque, Holy Trinity church, supermarket... ). I recommended this hostel to all travellers :)
What can I say other than thar it was a truly amazing stay for me. This place was recommended to me by other travellers I met in Kyrgyzstan and I can only forward that recommendation to others when visiting Karakol. Apart from the coziness, cleanliness and good breakfast, Mars and Samara truly did go the extra mile to make my stay as good as possible. It was an amazing human experience, that I will remember. If I were to come back to Kyrgyzstan, I will make sure to go and visit again. Thnx so much, raxmat.
One of the best hostels, run by a family with ease. Everything was quick and easy, and hostel is placed really good near a nice ortodox wooden church. Place is also full of travelers who are open to activities which is the reason why everyone comes to Karakol. On the reception you can also find detailed information about really nice places to visit, even in the snow you can hike and explore (if you have what it takes). If I come back I would try to stay here again.
I had an incredible stay at the hostel in Karakol! The personnel was super helpful and friendly, making me feel like home. The place was comfortable and clean. Vibe was good for relaxation and meeting new people. Between hikes I loved studying with laptop at the kitchen area. The cherry on top was the wonderful coffee machine that helped fuel my adventures during the day.
Highly recommended!
Didn't expect to find this nice, comfortable and clean hotel. Food and all-inclusive breakfast at their restaurant were delicious. Administrators (two guys, sorry forgot their names already :-( ) were friendly and very helpful, thank you! All staff was friendly btw. So many benefits for a good price. My partner and I enjoyed staying at the hotel very much. Thanks a lot!
The hosts are very friendly. Always available to help with questions about Karakol, even if you don't speak Russian.
The house is large with good spaces, natural light and great view. The bathroom is new, clean and spacious. When I return to Karakol, I want to stay in this house.
The host is extremely helpful and helped us sort out our transport back to bishkek. the hotel itself is great , the room is comfortable and has all facilities
The breakfast - is in 1 word amazing, and is the best breakfast we had in kyrgyzstan, would highly recommend the place
Modern and comfortable apartment in a central location with great views and it has everything you need. Excellent communication with the owner before and throughout the stay, he was always ready to help. Would definitely recommend staying here for those visiting Karakol.
Everything about the stay was excellent. The host takes care of everything you want to do in Kyrgyzstan. She arranged our transportation from Bishkek and helped us plan all our day trips. She basically helps you with everything you need at the most reasonable price.
Great guesthouse- clean and comfortable rooms, tastefully appointed with places to relax outside. The breakfast was amazing. The owner was very helpful and provided lots of information about Karakol and the surrounding area.
I would like to thank the hotel staff for making my stay amazing. The staff was very polite and welcoming! The room was very clean and neat. I loved the breakfast very much. Definitely I'm coming back to Muras hotel.
Comfy accommodation with a great breakfast. The hotel staff really tries helping with whatever you need. Especially the blonde lady at the reception was super helpful. I went there twice and might go again.
It is amazing… and less expensive. Better than any homestays… because most of the homestays dont have private washrooms. But this hotel has everything we need. The staff here is also so kind and helpful.
Very clean and conveniently located in a quiet neighborhood a short walk from the center. Room was warm, which is important as it’s getting cold outside. Best breakfast buffet I’ve had in Kyrgyzstan!
The host was very nice and friendly. The room was comfortable and the bathroom was clean. The guesthouse is located in a quiet neighborhood outside of Karakol, easily accessible by foot.
Good stay to get to ala kul & first have an eve in karakol. Host was really nice and helped us out with a lot of practicalities. The room was very decent and breakfast was ok!
Very kind, helpful and professional staff.
Amazing picturesque view from the room.
Best coffee I have had in Kyrgyzstan, was on this hotel.
Big room with lots of space.
Good location, nice room, very friendly staff, we made this hotel as our point of reference in Karakol, and we loved to return to it after the trekking we did.
