Karakol is a small, charming, village-like town located at the foot of the mountains. The views are spectacular, the air is tasty-fresh, the food is diverse and as organic as it gets; most importantly, people are open, welcoming, a little reserved at first, but ready to help once you approach them.
Infrastructure and buildings are decayed, but it only adds to the charm of the town if you are open to go through a little hardship here and there, especially if you are arriving from a megapolis.
Karakol offers a few interesting museums and galleries, but the main attraction is that it is an intermediary place to starting your journey exploring peaks, gorges, vallies, hot springs and all the other natural gems that Kyrgyzstan offers its guests. The town itself has very interesting history and a crazy mix of many ethnic groups (Kyrgyz, Ukrainian, Dungan, Russian, Korean, German, Uzbek, Uyghur, Tatar, etc). Find yourself a local friend (easier to do in Kyrgyzstan) and he/she will open up doors to many other amazing sides of Karakol.

You can easily stay one week or longer in this destination.
You can easily stay one week or longer in this destination. There is everything you may expect from Kyrgyzstan: lake Issyk Kul just a few Km from Karakol, amazing mountains with lost od different treks: one-day or multiple-day. I suggest to definitely climb to Ala Kol lake, visit Teleti valley or go up to the pass, immerse in hot springs in Altyn Arashan, or if you need a modern structure go to Ak-Suu thermal pools. Jeti-Ögüz is a 100% must see, or go to Jargalan valley and admire dozens of semi-wild horses, rent one of them and enjoy the view to the world from horseback. Buy some local hand-made products e.g. shirdak carpets, taste awesome local cuisine (esp. lamb, plov or manty) and don't miss local market in Karakol, wooden Holy Trinity Cathedral, unusual architecture of Dungan mosque or Sunday animal market in the town suburbs.

We stayed in Karakol for 2 nights - before and after our hike to Ala Kol lake. I would recommend bringing camping gear from your home country as the shops in Karakol aren't great. There are companies though that you can rent tents, cooking gear etc. if you prefer. Karakol has few cafes and restaurants (we tried Cat Cafe and Meeting Point) aimed for overseas travelers but also places to try local culinary (unfortunately the highly recommended place was closed for Eid).

The town is very flat and was not what we expected.
The town is very flat and was not what we expected. It had all the things we needed (restaurants, convenience stores, petrol stations) and was easy to get around. The museum was well worth the visit. The cathedral we only saw the garden and outside. It was a lovely unique piece of architecture. The real attractions are the mountain passes and valleys.
One of the most beautiful hostels I have ever stayed! A cross between a hostel and bed and breakfast! The first floor shared areas are decorated in a luxurious ranch style with leather sofas, rugs on hardwood floors, and sturdy hardwood tables. The rooms are equally cozy and the entire facility is immaculate, bathrooms included.
The host Andre has lived in Kyrgyzstan for years and has a wealth of knowledge about hiking, skiing and the area generally. The facilities are truly beautiful, clean and the breakfast was wonderful!
This was the best place where we stayed during 3 weeks in Kyrgyzstan.
Everything is in very good condition, great hot shower waiting for you to return from trekking and internet connection.
The host is fluent in English and we bothered her all the time with questions which she kindly answered. She always called taxis for us, provided hints, tried to find out the state of bridges in Karakol valley which have been affected during previous weeks and many other.
I can't think of anything which could have been better.
Breakfast was lovely, the yurt was comfortable, and the bathrooms excellent (with high quality toilet paper, even). An excellent location between mountains and the center, with a nice Terrace restaurant nearby, as well as a grocery store. Close also to Lighthouse Karakol and Ashlyan Fu Alley. The hosts also helped us arrange our trip to the next destination, with prices much, much more affordable than those quoted to us elsewhere (I speak Russian, so the language was not the issue). Very kind and friendly people.
Nurdin is the kindest and most welcoming man I have met in Kyrgyzstan. He speaks great English and was super helpful in planning my time in Karakol. His family are so sweet and offered me lots of food during my stay. Room was clean and comfortable. Great value for money. And location is nice - near a park, and also near a regular bus stop to take you to the centre if you don't feel like walking. Overall had a great stay here. Thanks so much Nurdin and family!
The property is managed by 2 sisters who are very helpful in any way. They allowed our luggage to be stored in the reception for 2 nights while we trek in Altyn-Arashan. 🙏🏻
The property is very clean and well maintained. The atmosphere of the property is very calm and so we can sleep for more than 8 hrs. straight.
The kitchen has anything you need. It is close to everything in Karakol - shops, restaurants and nearby attractions.
Best family run Hostel (Feels like Home❤️) in Karakol. Located very close to center, the rooms are larger, meals were great, friendly, knowledgful & helpful Host & very Budget friendly.
Jalil (Host) also has In-House guides for Trekking /Horse Trek, SUV for travel etc,
I booked 2 Nights but ended up staying 3😊,
There is a Inbuilt Sauna too for a fees,
Will definitely will be going back soon😊✌️
Matsunoki is a cozy, clean and nicely designed hotel. I arrived at 5am in karakol and Yuka the owner warmly welcomed me. she prepare the breakfast and explained nearby facilities and sightseeing spots. The room was clean, hot shower was available, and the bed was super comfortable. I had a wonderful stay and will surely come back in case I visit karakol again.
Clean and comfortable. Host were enjoyable to talk to and were educational about the history and culture of Kyrgyzstan. Walking distance to downtown. Great in helping out with formulating a daily plan to see the surrounding area. Knowledgeable about the local transportation system and getting around. We’re able to arrange a taxi for three people to Bishkek.
Beautiful yurt stay in Karakol. The inside of the yurt was decorated in a lovely way, the beds were comfy and the blankets were warm as it can get chilli in the mountains. The facilities were all really new and clean. The hosts were generous, friendly and informative and the breakfast that you can purchase as an option delicious. You won't be disappointed!
Good location, near the commercial area with grocery shops and restaurant. And "Destination Karakol" just around the corner. A good vibe and good place to meet fellow travellers to exchange information and tips. Reception also provide good information on day or days hike. And you can leave your luggage in the "locker" room.
This was a great guesthouse only 10 minutes from the center of Karakol. The owners are extremely kind and spent time to get to know us and talk to us. They also helped us arrange transportation to the local ski resort at a much more reasonable price than we could find ourselves. Couldn't have asked for a better experience!
The host was very friendly and helpful. She arranged all our tours and transfers. The rooms were very clean and tidy. We had a nice view of the mountains. A perfect location, can cover everything in Karakol just by walking. Also, there are many restaurants and cafes nearby. There was also a supermarket below the hotel.
We really loved staying at Ordo Hotel Hostel! It is the best accommodation in Karakol with the most delicious breakfast :-). The host is very nice - helps everyone with any problem or question. The rooms are very clean and comfortable, the kitchen is very well equipped. It feels like home :-)
The host is extremely helpful and helped us sort out our transport back to bishkek. the hotel itself is great , the room is comfortable and has all facilities
The breakfast - is in 1 word amazing, and is the best breakfast we had in kyrgyzstan, would highly recommend the place
- Helpful and friendly staff
- Well kept facilities
- Valuable advice on common treks and activities in karakol
- Excellent location to Karakol valley and other nearby stores
- Great spot for hikers as everyone respects 11pm quiet rule
Very cosy apartment right in the centre of Karakol. You'll have all the needed facilities that you might need during your stay. You'll receive convenient instructions of how to find the location and how to use facilities in the flat.
Sweetest staff we met in all of Kyrgyzstan. The young couple servicing the place were very helpful and charming and if me and my girlfriend come back to Karakol, we will surely come back.
The hotel was nice. The room came with all needed amenities, but some things were not properly affixed (e.g. wibbling toilet). The breakfast is not included and you have to pay extra.
Very kind, helpful and professional staff.
Amazing picturesque view from the room.
Best coffee I have had in Kyrgyzstan, was on this hotel.
Big room with lots of space.
