The staff were amazing from start to finish. They went over and beyond right from the moment we entered the hotel, greeting us and ensuring our staff was comfortable and we were happy. Couldn’t have wished for a better place to stay! The morning of checkin, my partner put his back out and was as bed-bound for almost a week while it healed. We ended up extending our stay to almost two weeks to allow him time to get better and we’re so thankful we were checking into such a lovely hotel when this happened!
Our room (studio with terrace) was massive, the pictures don’t do it justice at all, beautiful big windows/doors with a lovely view of the garden letting in loads of light (but with big proper curtains for privacy if you want it) A comfy sofa and arm chair, dining table, kitchen with huge fridge and ample cooking facilities, lovely bathroom. The mattress was probably the best we’ve ever slept on in a hotel, so comfy, great pillows too. The AC was amazing and room very well insulated, we could turn the AC off all day while we were out and we’d come back to a room still cool. Plus the room was super clean and considering we were on the ground floor we were surprise we didn’t have any ants or bugs at all in the room. Lovely big pool that’s cleaned & maintained several times a week by a pool professional, big comfy, padded sun loungers. Tasty and varied breakfast menu - because we were there so long we tried everything on the menu and it’s all delicious and served fresh to order. Proper good French press coffee! Everyone who works there is happy and helpful and full of smiles and you can tell it’s a family run place. FREE water refills were a life saver! Two very cute cats owned by the family were also a joy to play with.
Some might fear the location is a little out of town but it’s a short 10 minute walk down the hill and you’re at the beach or in town, and there are a number of restaurants just around the corner from the hotel anyway as well as a small local shop selling snacks and drinks for a very reasonable price. Also, there are loads of options on Uber eats that deliver to the hotel if you want a chilled night in.

The location is wonderful. We had a beautiful view of the sea over the rocks. 5mins from the main strip of shops, bars and restaurants. The manager and staff couldn't do any more to accommodate us and the breakfasts were delicious and felt like it was made with love. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and couldn't recommend it more. Our villa was huge and the bedrooms were well sized. We loved the outdoor showers, we thought this was an exceptionally well planned part of the room.

I've been to Unawatuna 4 times/years and that beautiful place changes for worse.
There is new oversized monster-hotel, water scooters, loud music, fireworks, higher prices...
In last 2 years 90% of tourists are Russians - some restaurants are only in russian.
Most likely, I am not going back.

Unawatuna beach has beautiful water and golden sand.
Unawatuna beach has beautiful water and golden sand. The part of the beach where I visited, the ocean gets quite deep very fast, and the waves seem to cary you in quite easily. I haven't seen any lifeguards or flags that would indicate the wave's condition, but local people were very kind to give information.
If you like hiking, the city has a nice trail to a beach called Jungle beach. Trough the same trail, you can pass by the Japanese Peace Pagoda, and if you are lucky you might see monkeys and lizards. The trail is more or less 40 min one way.
The restaurants from the hotels are very much on the coast, sometimes seems to close from the beach. But the food quality is good and affordable, and lots of these restaurants offer alcohol.
I stayed one day in Unawatuna and it felt enough time to discover what the city has to offer.

I heard that this used to be a great beach.
I heard that this used to be a great beach. Unfortunately I do not think it is today. Very exploited and there are many beach places renting out sunbeds. They can get away with having (very) crappy toilets because there are new tourists every day, they do not need a good review.
Having dinner on the beach was a strange experience, started out good but then a large company came and occupied the space next to us, ordering champagne, oysters and lobsters like there was no tomorrow, and we were forgotten about.
There are plenty of other beaches in Sri Lanka that are much better.
We stayed at the hotel for 5 nights and had an extremely comfortable stay. The view from the hotel was fabulous and we were very close to the beach. The staff was nice enough to make arrangements for us to visit their sister property which overlooks the beach. The food was good and the staff was very supportive in getting customised meals for our 3.5 year old.
Special mention and a big thank you to Tharanga, Dilrukshe, Mahender, Lahiru and Subadra.
Highly recommend the hotel to those travelling to Unawatuna.
The hotel staff was amazingly considerate, like everybody in Sri Lanka. They helped us with every single request. Moreover, the hotel facilities were really nice, a decent swimming pool, a fine restaurant with different options of meat, seafood, and vegetarian meals, that you could enjoy while relaxing on a comfortable beachbed. The room was also great, with a jacuzzi and a stunning view to the ocean. The beach was idyllic and the hotel rented a surfboard, which was good for beginners to learn how to surf.
We spent about 2 weeks in Sri Lanka and The Waves was the best property where we lived in Sri Lanka. It should be rated as very clean by Sri Lanka standards, also in perfect location. Free sunbeds and beach towels. Super comforfable bed, very good AC and an amazing shower.
I will add also that wifi was working very good, we were on workation and were able to have calls and everything without problems.
In staying in Unawatuna, I would really recommend this, it's not cheap, but it is worth the price.
Amazing views, from the balconies & especially the roof terrace. The breakfast is amazing, everything is freshly prepared on the roof top while you are gazing out over the ocean. Clean and neat rooms/bathroom, staff member Charles was brilliant, always friendly and very helpful. Hotel owner helped to arrange a ride to Ella for a very fair price. Tucked away in the mountains, super close to the beach and town. Definitely recommend this place for a couple of nights in Unawatuna.
The owners of this hotel are wonderful the staff are lovely and friendly, the rooms are spacious with very comfy beds and sofas. Wi-Fi is outstanding. Swimming pool huge. Omelettes are perfect and great coffee. Monkeys can be seen in the trees from the garden and the location is perfect it sits only a short walk from jungle beach which has a great restaurant and the beach is beautiful and the village on Unawatuna with loads of amazing beach restaurants and little shops.
Staff were extremely friendly. They chatted with my old father and helped cheer up crying toddler. and also accommodated early check in though we ended up arriving later. Hostess made lovely tea. Their son was very friendly. They accommodated breakfast for my toddler last minute which was very nice of the hosts. Real Sri Lankan friendliness at its best!
Away from main road so no vehicle noise. They closed the gate at night so it felt safe.
Smallest "hotel" I have ever stayed, but this was a sweet surprise! Positives:
a) the staff was extremely good and courteous.
b) the food (the beach restaurant) was good and the breakfast was so well served.
c) the most modern bathroom I saw during my Sri Lanka visit.
d) The location is awesome, right on the beach and in the center of Unawatuna Market Road
Extraordinary place with lovely and caring owner. They help with everything and even organized a birthday breakfast with flowers, cake and candle We had a huge room with a private terrasse right above the sea. Very quiet, you only hear the waves and the birds but only ten minutes walk to the Center or the sandy beach..Best Hotel we stayed in Sri Lanka!
The location overlooking the water was awesome, and the small pool on the rocks was so nice to come home to. They really try to do everything for you. The breakfast was awesome, and the view that went with it couldn't be better. Good wifi, and no powercuts, which is a normal thing for Sri Lanka.
This hotel is great. The pool is absolutely amazing, it offers a cool view, the water is heated and clean. The staff is nice and also the food in the restaurant is very good (but pricey for Sri Lanka). The room was nice too and the hotel is located close to the beach (you can clearly walk).
We where very happy with our stay at the Green Escape Unawatuna. The staff was sweet and helpfull, the food was great and the hotel had all you could ask for. The hotel is located in a nice area great for walking, yoga and going to the beach. We would very much recommend!
This is a nice hotel with great views of the hills behind Unawatuna. It's located in a quiet area away from the main beaches, which is nice. The staff are helpful and made us a lovely Sri Lankan breakfast. Rooms are spacious and air con works well.
Great location, out of town, but within walking distance.
Wonderful welcone from hotel owners.
Quiet poolside, with loungers & shady trees.
Airy studio room, with private balcony, nice sea view, air con & ceiling fans.
Easy access to property. Location is very convient and walking distance to Unawatuna beach and resturants.
Villa is very clean and tidy. It is surounded by a big garden. Very calm and quite. Hots is very friendly.
One of our best experiences in Sri Lanka.
Beautiful space with distinguishing design and service above all expectations.
Separate compliments are for the menu and chef.
Definitely will return again.
Our villa was stunning with views of the ocean. The hotel is located right across from Unawatuna beach which is so convenient for swimming/eating/drinking. The staff were all lovely.
The style of this hotel is beautiful! Very scenic and a great location to explore Unawatuna and it's beaches. The breakfast was great and the staff were lovely.
