The independent square, Gale face, the museum and the parliament were our favorites in our short stay but there are lot more. Your hotel must have a tour that takes you to a variety of places. We stayed at Jetwing Colombo Seven. They offers an electric Tuk-tuk tour for $50. But we didn't have enough time.
Colombo traffic and moving around is bit scary but getting around is easy with taxis. Install Pickme app (Sri lanka's version of Uber but even better!) and use it. There are a lot of local busses too. So get a map and use rout numbers. Young locals know English very well. So ask them. Mugging foreign visitors are rare but avoid being alone in dark streets.

People are very friendly.
People are very friendly. Enough and more street food and restaurants… few good people places to hang out too… you can catch an Uber and travel anywhere with ease.
Only problem is fake beggars at every single traffic light/junction

My wife has loved this city for many years.
My wife has loved this city for many years. It is worth adding on to a trip for shopping eg Barefoot, Paradise Rd, Odel. The new Park St mews area is great for modern cocktails and dining options, better than Dutch Hospital complex. Be firm with three-wheeler drivers and have an idea on the likely cost and stick with that. Avoid those offering tours or even meters. Visit the museum in the Galle Face Hotel, see a sunset at Galle Face Green, stroll in the park, explore Fort and Pettah areas.

Colombo, my home town is always very nice.
Busy city, too much of traffic congestions, weather for foreigners from cold countries like Australia is a bit un-comfortable due to high humidity.
Still overhaul it is a good holiday destination.

Colombo is the capital city of Sri Lanka that is renown for its aromatic spices and tea. We were surprised that it is technically an island in the Indian Ocean. We were also happy to know that progress had been made, despite the recent challenges of the government and the economy. The country is among Top 10 in World Cricket ranking and we did see many children and youth in cricket academies. We also noted many statues of the great Buddha and (Buddhist temples) and entered one of them - we were asked to remove our shoes.

As we had spent nearly all of our time in small peaceful communities it was a bit busy for our liking. We were happy having booked a city tour by tuk tuk . The tour gave us a great overview of the main sites in the city which we never would have managed on our own .

The room is so beautiful and the bed is so comfortable. The Best toilet and shower. It is byfar the best hotel we stayed in Sri Lanka. The location is perfect, near to restaurants (Burger King, KFC), Spa Ceylon and the Ministry of Crab. We will pick this hotel again when we come back to Sri Lanka. Rooftop has views over Colombo city and Lotus Tower. We had good Ice tea as a welcome drink, sent to the room.
We visited Sayura house in late August and absolutely loved our stay! The staff was exceptionally welcoming and kind, including the hotel dog Max, the breakfast and laundry service were among the best we witnessed during our stay in Sri Lanka. An additional highlight is the rooftop terrace, from which you can watch spectacular sunsets.
This has to be one of the best hotels in Sri Lanka. It is the best accommodation I've stayed in, in the 5 weeks I've spent in SL. The hotel itself was immaculately cleaned, the bed was extremely comfortable, and the linen was soft and clean. The infinity pool was great to cool off and watch the sun set 😎
Everything was wonderful. Felt like staying in a luxury hotel but also with friends at the same time. Gorgeous bed and linens and a delicious breakfast. Location is also great and I felt overall it was one of the best value for what I got stays in Sri Lanka.
Thank you Glenn and Fiona!
If you're into history, then this hotel is for you. This is one of the oldest hostels in Sri Lanka; in its heyday, it was the top luxury hotel on the island where numerous famous guests used to stay.
