I appreciated the breakfast buffet even though there was no fruit juice. The croissants were excellent & the cut fruit was fresh & tasty. Was not there to try the Happy Hour so cannot comment.
The first night the street noise kept me awake a lot. Changed rooms & the second night some sort of equipment/machinery was disturbing so didn't sleep well again. Third night was okay. The rooms could use some TLC. You might consider changing the lamps, upgrading the bathrooms & adding room safes.
Comfortable bed. Great mini-breakfast and wine tasting/happy hour.
Price was reasonable. Valet parking was cheap for SF. Very attentive bellmen.
Took one hour to get the car which was probably in the parking garage across the street. This is an older hotel with unavoidable street noise and no ventilation(limited heat or A/C), but I brought a portable fan with me.
location, staff, wine time and breakfast
our room looked a little "tired" out of date TV, carpet and furniture worn but I still love the place
Strategic location. Nice staff. Breakfast is essential but good quality muffins. Big rooms.
Very clean and quiet room (I specifically asked for a quiet room and ended up with one of those inside looking at the courtyard, rather than the busy Post Street, which was great!). The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is basic but a good mix of pastries and fruits (and with no limits!), and the wine hour is a great way to end your busy day.
The wifi is often very slow (seemed to only work efficiently around late morning, when I guess most hotel guests are out) -- but the computers in the lobby are working perfectly fine.
A nice size of the bathroom and the separated kitchen area in the room was plus.
The hair dryer was old and noisy.
Acceptable price in downtown SF, around 10min walking time to the Powell BART station and the cable car. The decoration of the hotel reminds me the old time, overall is nice.
WiFi in room is not strong enough to link the internet, and the shower equipment need to update. Non-aircon will be a problem to others.
Windows close bad. Noise from street is insufferable.
Decent location - always felt safe walking about. Beds were comfortable Lots of 'old world' in the architecture Would be great for older couples interested in a very low fuss place.
I was there over a weekend for a bit of exploring before working the following week. Arriving at this hotel felt like arriving to stay at a retirement home. The place is definitely a historical building, but the foyer had an almost deathly quiet about it. Importantly: the wifi service was absolutely atrocious - absolutely no way to get online from my room and even in the lobby it was patchy. Like all old San Francisco buildings, you can hear lots of noise from the street once you get into your room.
The staff was friendly, the hotel was very clean, and they served free wine and cheese daily!
The rooms were a little small, but for the money they were decent.
Booked hotel after reading reviews, really enjoyed our stay, everyone very friendly and helpful, lovely homely atmosphere. Hotels Victorian design was beautiful
Television should be updated,
Large, clean room. Great value and location! Will stay there again for sure!!
Asked for to be relocated and was declined - full. Later I booked into another hotel and when informed we were leaving magically another room was available. Better but dont know why it was not provided when 1st asked. Never will go back. A prison likley provides more hospitality
Old style charm. Convenience of breakfast on site and charm of afternoon reception. Seating in the lobby invites guests to interact. Many international guests.
Service was excellent and they let us check in early!
The hotel was old fashioned in concept and design--elegant lobby and rooms. There were continental breakfasts each morning, a wine and refreshment hour erach night: wonderful!
The hotel was very close to a somewhat dangerous area: the Tenderloin district; yet, some very good attractions are available in that district too. Mixed blessing.
We got a free upgrade into a double queen bed suite. Staff was very nice and friendly. Place is very nice and quiet.
Not many channels, couldn't watch the football game. Breakfast did not have much.
The price I got for a junior suite could not be beat. The suite had a kitchen with all the utensils, and a huge bath. This is an older hotel that needs a little updating but is clean.
It is located right next door to a hostel which was very noisy. The location is not bad or unsafe, just noisy. I have to say the staff were not informative at all - they didn't tell me about breakfast or happy hour. and breakfast is very very basic - although it is better than nothing, I suppose. There is no air conditioning other than opening a window which usually would be just fine but it's too noisy to sleep with the street noise.
Close to Union Square
Marginal area, very outdated. Needs major renovation
Friendly staff Very comfortable bed Beautiful Lobby Area Victorian ambiance
I have to be gluten free, so even though the fruit was wonderful, it would have been nice to have some protein (hard boiled eggs, cheese?) in the mix with all the lovely (but not accessible for me) sweet rolls. It would have been nice to have screens on the windows so one could open up the windows without possibility of letting in bits and creature of/from the outside.
Good location great staff and how nice to have wine and cheese provided every afternoon when we arrived homer from a busy day I highly recommend this little gem of a hotel in a great city
Cheese and wine in the lobby each afternoon
No air conditioning Old TV and decor
Location to Union Square, public transport & shops. The extras the hotel offer like the breakfast & cheese & wine evenings - nice touch!
Need to be careful that you don't take a wrong turn as some neighbouring streets are pretty seedy :(
Location was good. 4 blocks in either direction to a cable car line. Very clean. Bed was comfortable and pillows too. Large bathroom with 2 shower heads.
It was noisy from street noise of the city. Windows are single pane older. Checked them a few times because of the noise. No air conditioning. Not a problem in Nov, but other times? Breakfast Danishes and fruit, coffee & tea.
