The location is amazing! We were able to walk everywhere easily. The rooftop terrace was a great touch.
The elevators are the old fashioned style and had the gate and door. That made it difficult when trying to get through with luggage.
We were very lucky and fortunate with timing to have been in the position to receive an upgrade from our standard reserved room to a suite on the top (10th) floor - for 4 nights, so our impressions are naturally skewed to the positive. Regardless of that, the staff treated us consistently like royalty, and all service requests were instantly satisfied. Having operable windows in the room allowed us to generally just leave them open for fresh air circulation and avoid using the A/C altogether. There is no general category of experience that did not exceed our expectations. There will always be an annoying detail or two, but they do not detract from the aggregate.
I have read a lot of complaints about the elevators "primitive" operation. While I did not personally have problems with that, and in fact find it quaint to the point of bringing a smile to my face when using them, it is true that in move-in/move-out situations with multiple baggage items the door operations are difficult at best. An in-house baggage service, or at least assistance during move-in/move-out should be a standard offering. Regarding the accommodations, the only real shortcoming was the bath surround. While the remodeling used high quality materials assembled in a very nice design, the execution at the tub resulted in an actual trough all around the tub that collected water while showering. We discovered on the first day that we had to be very careful with 2 people showering in succession to keep the shower head aimed down and totally within the tub so it would not spill over to the bathroom floor. The top of the still in place shower door frame (curtains are used now) was lower than the tub rim, so overflow went to the floor as opposed to back into the tub. The installation edge really needed to be even with or above the tub rim as opposed to below. It was nice to have a kitchenette, but not useful as there were no pots, pans, dishes or flatware as we have seen in other like accommodations.
Hotel was nice, rooms were clean & staff was friendly. Even the cleaning staff said Goodmorning & asked if we needed anything.
This was our first time in the area & if I would have know how noisy the Gaslamp district was I would have opted fir a different location.
Location is great. Just a bit off the main Gas Lamp District but surprisingly quiet. Even though they leave you earplugs and warn you on check-in of noise it was very quiet and comfortable.
Being an old hotel the room was very small but functional. My only complaint was the small shower and ridiculously weird plumbing that was not suitable for a short person. The shower head was not adjustable and was aimed directly at the height of my face.
I just told you. See above.
The shower was a joke,I mean come on.
Great staff & wonderful old building in a great location! Spectacular views from the rooftop terrace & reasonable meals next door in the 24hr diner.
First of all the staff from the bellman to the front desk, including the wait staff in the adjoining hotel restaurant's "Brian's 24" was first rate, excellent service. We enjoyed the ambiance of the older architect of the hotel, it's loctation close to everything from convention center to many great restaurants in the area. You can't beat the great food next door "Brian's Restaurant", we loved that place. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and hh drinks on the roof top topped our day's activities.
Late night street noise - Saturday night. Ear plugs worked great. Not everyone had a problem with the busy street noise, but I'm used to living out on an island not a downtown city hotel.
Close to everything
Had to pay to park
I was upgraded to a sweet randomly and it was an awesome suprise.
location was ok attached24-hr restaurant good staff was good
bathroom not very clean water from faucet smelled room windows need sound proofing.
nice old building and very central location
rooms are noisy especially at lower floors
Friendliness and helpfulness of the people who love the old building and want each guest to be happy there.
Wifi was difficult- up and down. The elevator is tough for business travel, but the overall building and restoration in period is very charming.
Old Hotel, which is ok, but it is noisy and they leave a card on your pillow telling you to turn on the window air conditioner to drown out the noise. The rooms are so small that the air conditioner blows right in your face. You have to decide between noise and having fan in your face all night.
great and friendly staff rooftop terrace location in gas lamp quarter
no breakfast included room felt a bit cramped (but still acceptable)
location for the money
we thought roof top would stay open all night
Location was great and the building is very nice for a hundred year old hotel. Very historical with the elevator system. The rooftop lounge is a must see.
The rooms are tiny so don't bring children or a lot of luggage and you will be fine. The wait to get your car pulled up can be ridiculous so make sure you call early.
Valet takes 15 minutes minimum each time, vending machines didn't work, staff helpful only half the time.
The lifts are ancient - they're advertised as running at the original speed they operated at when first installed. Can be pretty slow to get one in busier times.
The hotel is very old.It is noisy.Wifi was poor.Parking is 20USD/day.The price is very high for the offered services.Sink was in the room, not in bath.
Staff were knowledgeable and friendly Location good
Size of room Dark room, window so small Elevators working inconsistently No restaurant
The bed was very comfortable. We can use free-wifi everywhere in the hotel. 24/7 opened restaurant is also awesome!!
I liked the architecture and the style of the hotel.
No free breakfast, no pool, and high prices for valet parking.
