Great location and price
Old elavator. Would not work for those w fiscal challenges
The view from the too
Roof terrace, bring your own beer Perfect Location Great room Price Friendly and helpful staff
Location in center of city close to Balboa Theater. The hotel was a good remodel of an old building. Great ambiance. The people in charge were friendly and helpful. Loved the rooftop area to view all of San Diego.
Air conditioners were very noisy and somewhat ineffective. I would have liked a small fridge and microwave.
Incompetent staff, we were unable to check in even after the required 3 pm check in. Woman behind the desk never thought to check to see if any other rooms were available instead of the two that were specifically set aside for us until I asked! Gym was a complete joke, rundown and old with only two machines. Rooms very cramped and dated flooring and bathrooms (didn't walk around barefoot) and dingy tile floors in bathroom. A/C units were in the windows so you could here all the street noise (ambulances, people, cars, etc) all night making sleep difficult. They even give you one (even though it was my husband and I in the room) pairs of earplugs as a suggestion to get sleep (uhhh ok?). We were a party of four with one car and they charged us both for the parking at check out and the manger was unresponsive and as incompetent as his staff when we asked for assistance. The ONLY highlight in staff was the shuttle driver that took us to the airport. Super friendly and hard working kid. This hotel could benifit from hiring less empathetic staff and upgrade the rooms to improve on noise and cleanliness.
I liked the location and the distance from the airport. The food at Brian's which is a 24 hour spot connected to the hotel.
The 20min shuttle to the hotel was a hour late picking us up. I did not like discovering after check in that the hotel is historic. The elevator is old fashion and self operated. I requested a double bedroom and what I got was two rooms with only enough room for one bed. The room had roaches. The windows lead out to a enclosed brick wall. Whenever people showered in the room above us our pipes would loudly rattle. The sheets had spots on them. The room did not feel clean.
I liked the way the staff from the driver to the GM all worked very hard to make my trip a great one. The location in the gaslamp was great
I really did not like the small rooms..but the GM took care of everything and I left a very happy man
Location near shops bars food Staff very friendly cheerful and approachable Beautiful interior and rooftop views
Where it was location was nice
The hotel was old and the parking wasn't very good. The room was very small and had a noisy air conditioner.
Location Rooftop terrace 24 hour restaurant
An older hotel. Small rooms. Noisy A/C
Location Free pick up and drop off to airport Terrace with fantastic view
Room felt a bit claustrophobic Air con worked properly but very noisy
Location near Petco Park Near restaurants Easy to find Old building but full of character
Love the location and the valets were pretty quick
didn't expect the size of the room to be so small. We didn't like the elevator, it was small (and kinda hot)
Out side of the building looked cool
Rooftop lounge was awesome Good location Old feel to the hotel was nice...at first Restaurant in lobby was a nice touch (open 24 hours) Free wi-fi
The air conditioning malfunctioned during our stay and decided to make extremely loud noises that kept my girlfriend and I up a majority of the night. The gate elevators are cool at first, but get old when you think they are going to snap your fingers off every time they close. No help carrying bags to room, there wasn't even a cart to put your bags on to carry yourself. You have to pay for parking, although I think this is standard for the Gaslamp. Rooms NEED to be UPDATED! At a certain point the hotel needs to update things like the air conditioning, the heater (which you could burn yourself on), or the paint among many other things. Plain and simple, other hotels in the area are going for $20-$40 more a night. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money to get a good night sleep at the very least.
Location, Location, Location. This hotel has a great location in the heart of Gaslamp. Within walking distance to everything downtown. Also the attached 24 hour restaurant, which handled room service had great food, as evidenced by the long lines (it stayed packed)
Everything was dated and needed to be updated. The overall quality was very poor. The room was tiny! It barely fit a queen size bed. There wasn't even a closet. Just a metal rack and a few hangers. The bathroom was also tiny. This is what passed as a suitable hotel room when the hotel was built like 80 years ago. Not today. The hotel only had two (antique) elevators that were very small and had long wait times. We often took the scenic stair route up and down 5 floors. Parking was a joke. $20 a day and a 10-15 minute wait to get your car (valet only). Would not recommend this hotel at all. Will return to sd, but will not stay here.
The Hotel was in a Great location. Easy access to everywhere in the Gaslamp district, lots of bars, restaurants, stores, Starbucks, banks, and PetCo Park were all within walking distance. About 20 minute drive over to the Hotel Del Coronado/Beach. Cute/Welcoming Lobby and Full Restaurant (which feeds the Room Service)24/7. The rooftop Patio was very nice. You can bring your own food and drink and sit up there, or order room service to the patio.
No Self Park at the Hotel. Valet = $20.00 USD/Day, (They dont tell you about this fee until you arrive). Manager said all rooms are the same size, about 9'x9' wide (Absolutely Tiny), No closet (just a rack hanging on the wall), No dresser, only about 3 drawers in the desk in the room. You have to ASK for them to clean your room daily, as they do not do it automatically. Bathroom was sooo small and compact that the bathroom door could not open all the way. No fan in the restroom. Water pressure was very poor. Water would go back and forth from hot and cold extremely fast while showering. Our water was actually shut off for about 2 hours during our stay and the Hotel Manager said the "Best he could do" was remove the $20.00 Valet fee for that day, with no other compensation but an "Im Sorry". He also had very poor customer service skills. I feel like there are much better deals downtown with better quality, and I will not return to this Hotel.
The valet parking, took long time
The location is amazing! We were able to walk everywhere easily. The rooftop terrace was a great touch.
The elevators are the old fashioned style and had the gate and door. That made it difficult when trying to get through with luggage.
We were very lucky and fortunate with timing to have been in the position to receive an upgrade from our standard reserved room to a suite on the top (10th) floor - for 4 nights, so our impressions are naturally skewed to the positive. Regardless of that, the staff treated us consistently like royalty, and all service requests were instantly satisfied. Having operable windows in the room allowed us to generally just leave them open for fresh air circulation and avoid using the A/C altogether. There is no general category of experience that did not exceed our expectations. There will always be an annoying detail or two, but they do not detract from the aggregate.
I have read a lot of complaints about the elevators "primitive" operation. While I did not personally have problems with that, and in fact find it quaint to the point of bringing a smile to my face when using them, it is true that in move-in/move-out situations with multiple baggage items the door operations are difficult at best. An in-house baggage service, or at least assistance during move-in/move-out should be a standard offering. Regarding the accommodations, the only real shortcoming was the bath surround. While the remodeling used high quality materials assembled in a very nice design, the execution at the tub resulted in an actual trough all around the tub that collected water while showering. We discovered on the first day that we had to be very careful with 2 people showering in succession to keep the shower head aimed down and totally within the tub so it would not spill over to the bathroom floor. The top of the still in place shower door frame (curtains are used now) was lower than the tub rim, so overflow went to the floor as opposed to back into the tub. The installation edge really needed to be even with or above the tub rim as opposed to below. It was nice to have a kitchenette, but not useful as there were no pots, pans, dishes or flatware as we have seen in other like accommodations.
Hotel was nice, rooms were clean & staff was friendly. Even the cleaning staff said Goodmorning & asked if we needed anything.
This was our first time in the area & if I would have know how noisy the Gaslamp district was I would have opted fir a different location.
Location is great. Just a bit off the main Gas Lamp District but surprisingly quiet. Even though they leave you earplugs and warn you on check-in of noise it was very quiet and comfortable.
Being an old hotel the room was very small but functional. My only complaint was the small shower and ridiculously weird plumbing that was not suitable for a short person. The shower head was not adjustable and was aimed directly at the height of my face.
I just told you. See above.
The shower was a joke,I mean come on.
Great staff & wonderful old building in a great location! Spectacular views from the rooftop terrace & reasonable meals next door in the 24hr diner.
