Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United KingdomThe bathroom was a bit dated and had a smell of drains
The room was lovely with a double aspect. It had everything we needed and the host Geoff was a lovely fella who was very helpful. Would stay again

GermanyThe shower was a bit difficult, the water temperature changed from hot to cold. I have seen two or three moths in the bedroom and a spider in the bathroom; but things like that happen, and I was already leaving anyway.
The hotel is lovely, my room was clean and comfortable, and the host was really friendly. The location is good, just about 10 minutes from the gorgeous city centre of York. I enjoyed the stay very much, and I am sad that I could not afford to stay longer.

AustraliaThe late check in was frustrating. The bed was not overly comfortable, the ensuite was tiny & shabby. Tiny TV.
Lovely old building within walking distance to the city centre. Staff polite & friendly. Off street parking was great.

United KingdomHost was very friendly and accommodating and provided good information about York. Although not right in the city centre, it was a very pleasant 20 minute walk along the river in to town.

United KingdomThe shower was positioned slightly funny. Could still shower, but had to lean in.
Such a lovely welcome from Geoff, with a run down for walks into town which was great as we got to walk along the canal for 10 minutes into town. It is really close to city centre but just enough of that is relatively quiet. Old fashioned building which I loved, our room has a bath and shower which was great as I got to relax. Tea and coffee facilities in the room but the location is so perfect you can just pop outside and there are a number of cafes to choose from. Would definitely stay again.

United KingdomThe only negative I could give was the bathroom was a little small but had everything you need and could have done with full length mirror. But not really anything that would stop me staying again.
Geoff was very helpful and kind. Nice easy walk to the centre and easy to find your way, especially with Geoff giving us directions. The house was beautiful and the room was lovely😀

United KingdomGeoff, the host made us feel very welcome, like staying with friends. Although there are no breakfast facilities on site, there is a great cafe next door, another 2 mins away, and a whole host of places to eat in the city itself. The buses run very frequently, although it's only a short walk along the river to get to the city. All in all I would highly recommend a stay at Holly Lodge if you are looking for a base for a city exploration. 😀

United KingdomIf I have to be critical... The lodge is an old building with real character and (very much like me) it's showing its age. The stairs up to the rooms are a bit steep, so if you are a bit immobile for whatever reason, you might find them a bit of a climb. The rooms are 'old school' with high ceilings and the decor reflects the character of the building. That didn't bother me in the slightest, but some might like a more modern looking room.
Holly Lodge is about 10 mins walk from York centre, which is great. However, the bus leaves from outside the lodge and takes you into the centre, if you don't feel like walking. The host Geoff, was a cracking bloke who welcomed us on arrival and was happy to help in any way he could. He even watched me out of the car park in case a car came up the road at the exit! Currently, you can't have breakfast in the lodge, but there's a cafe (Sunnies) about 30 seconds walk from the front door. We had breakfast there and it was outstanding and set us up for the day. Sunnies is closed on Sunday, (I was really disappointed!), but there is another cafe about a minutes walk away, just past the handy wee Sainsbury's store.

United KingdomFind out for yourself.
Geoff, the owner, is a no-nonsense guy, it is what it is. Technically the place needs re-wiring, re-plumbing, decorating, more readily available power sockets etc etc to bring it up to scratch BUT with that amount of investment the prices would have to rise considrrably. There's free parking which in York is a rareity. If you accept the place as it is then Geoff's happy. If you don't, don't come. Simple.

New ZealandThe shower pressure was terrible, I couldn't get the shampoo out of my hair. But it did get me clean. We were woken up by people coming in late.
The location was excellent, a really easy walk in to York for all the tourist sites. The greeting was kind and thoughtful. The parking was easy and we really appreciated that we could park early if needed.

United KingdomNothing.
I was met by Geoff on arrival, arranged check in time before arrival and had text message to confirm. Solo traveler, I was allocated room No 3, large room, very comfortably, good sized bathroom. Holly lodge is on the No 7 bus route, No 7 buses can be boarded at the railway station opposite side of the road to the station entrance. Sainsburys local virtually next door and several cafes very close. Depending on your lever of mobility York Centre is between 10-15 minutes away easily walkable but if you need you can catch the No 7 bus directly outside of the property.

United KingdomThe pressure in the shower was very low, and the pillows on the bed could have been better - maybe have a couple of softer ones as one was too low and two was too high. I thought it was quite expensive just for a room and no breakfast, but because I only booked it couple of months before there wasn't a lot of choice. Also there was no way of turning the landing light off, so the light was shining through the door frame all night. Maybe put it on a sensor so it only comes on when needed - would help to keep the overheads down.
The location was great, just a short walk to the river and then into the city. We were allowed to keep our car there after we checked out.
