    The breakfast does not have much choice, almost only savoury, and it closes quite early (last buffet refill at 8:30).

    The hotel is nice, comfortable for just one night. It's far to reach but you can definitely enjoy the quiet and the rooms are comfortable enough, same for the bed. It was clean overall, can't complain. The staff is incredibly nice, I would come back for one more night;

    room wasn't very clean with cobwebs, bed wasn't very comfortable and we had to ask for another mattress as ours was very worn. price for our dog was £15 pounds per night which wasn't clear at the time of the booking, there was a slight mix-up as to whether we stated we was bringing our dog but I think this is pretty steep unforeseen expenditure.

    good breakfast served in the morning, always someone on reception to answer any questions, staff generally very friendly and the location is great, nice walk through a nature garden with bird feeders and a stream. bar at night served till late and was reasonably priced. food from the restaurant was equally good but a little pricy if eating at night.

    Poor isolation so you can hear everything that moves around. It was cold all night, heating started only in the morning. Bed sheets had some stains.

    Nice food, friendly staff, parking space, old design. It was a confusion about the rooms availability however the staff reacted okay and resolved it very quickly

    The website boasts of bar meals served until 10pm but we arrived at 8 and they had stopped serving. We were given a bowl of chips to share.

    An imposing building set in fantastic grounds with a resident population of red squirrels.

    Great if you love Red Squirrels and birds. I came to photograph them so I was happy. The location is also good for dark skies, but the night I stayed it rained all night so astrophotography was out if the question.

    Old, tired, dated hotel, but full of character and great staff

    As I have said above, the hotel decor is old, tired and the place needs renovating. The food was just OK. The road to the hotel looks like it's been bombed by low flying jets over a number of years!

    Let's be honest, the hotel is dated, tired and needs modernising. The small road to the hotel is littered with potholes... but, it's an old-world hotel and you just have to embrace it. The staff were superb and very friendly, and it just added to an overall great experience. Also, there's a lovely bit of woodland in the hotel grounds to explore.

    The evening menu didn’t have many options suitable for vegans (which we needed) and was quite expensive.

    A nice location with a colony of red squirrels living on the grounds! Seeing the elusive squirrels was the highlight of our stay and I was able to get some great photographs of them. The room was clean, big and full of everything we needed. The staff even kindly gave us an electric heater which warmed us right up after our red squirrel walks. And there’s even red squirrel themed souvenirs, which help raise money for their protection. There was also lots of options at breakfast.

    Unfortunately the evening meals were not great. Vegetables over cooked or under cooked and a roast dinner served with no potatoes, when mentioned we were brought new potatoes not roast. Just very disappointed, the evening meals let down the rest of the hotel. The staff were all amazing and nothing was too much trouble. We would stay there again but not eat the evening meals. The breakfasts were great though.

    The hotel is a beautiful building and the surroundings are stunning.

    The signage to the hotel in the dark is very poor. I didn't see any signs traveling from Shap toward Kendal and nearly missed the sign going the other way. It would help that the signs are on the side of the road you are driving, ie on the left and as a solo driver you have a fighting chance of seeing the sign in the dark, even if a vehicle is coming toward you.

    Thank you for supper, the chef kindly put up a meal despite my late arrival, due to not spotting any signs of the main road. See the Red Squirrels in the morning was a bonus, my parents had been to the hotel on a coash trip and had remarked about the red squirels.
