The property is amazing especially the sunrise is stunning. The hosts are extremely knowledgable about the local culture, food, nature, politics etc etc which makes it a very valuable experience of true travelling.

There are not many food options near Kanlaya which means eating at home most nights. The room could have been slightly warmer but that is probably only relevant to me who has lived in the tropics for many years and finds anything under 20 degrees cold. All rooms do have air conditioning units which both cool and heat.

This is a lovely property. The rooms are well laid out, very clean and comfortable with wonderful views. The best feature of our stay were the hosts Gail and Philip. We were treated as part of an extended family and nothing was too much trouble for them to arrange. Sop Pong or more correctly the village of Baan Tham Lod where Kanlaya's Eyrie is located does not appear to have many attractions other than it famous cave Tham Nam Lot however the reality is that many of Pai's activities, such as kayaking and walking, are done at or near Baan Tam Lod. Philip has a plethora of activities for his guests on top of the cave, kayaking and walks. Our stay at Kanlaya was a highlight of our trip - the mixing with other guests around an outside fire and having a range of activities recommended and arranged for us. I wished we had skipped Pai and stayed 4 days here doing more of the day trips suggested by Philip.

Sometimes the lack of organisation or communication between staff

We had an absolutely marvellous experience at Kanlaya Home Stay! The rooms were beautifully decorated and provided a cosy and comfortable environment throughout our stay. The attention to detail in the design and furnishings including the garden were beautiful and one of a kind. But what truly stood out to me were the incredible dinners organised by the staff on both the 30th and 31st of December. The food was absolutely delicious, and I was amazed at how well-organised and thoughtfully prepared everything was. It was truly a feast for the senses, and I enjoyed every bite. I also thought it was great that Gail organised a New Year party for all the guests. I also appreciated the wide range of activities that were offered at Kanlaya Home Stay. From hiking to Karen lunches, there was always something exciting to do. It was a great opportunity to explore the beautiful surroundings and immerse myself in the local culture. Philip was a great help with organising a fully exciting f stay. Whilst there were a few instances where communication was a bit lost in translation and things got a bit chaotic, overall, it did not detract from my overall enjoyment of the stay. In fact, it added to the charm and made it feel more like a family experience rather than a traditional hotel stay. If you're looking for a place where you can truly feel like you're part of the family and not just a guest, I highly recommend Kanlaya Home Stay. The beautiful rooms, incredible dinners, and diverse activities make it a perfect choice for a unique and memorable stay.

Kanlaya’s Eyrie is paradise. Phillip and Gayle arw so welcoming and very helpful. The room was beautifully decorated and very comfortable with a large terrace. It’s a great location for visiting Nam Lod cave. The gardens at the hotel are beautiful and we had breakfast looking over the river and watching the mist clear from the mountains. Heaven.

There was nothing that stood out as poor needing improvement. This is not the cheapest property in the area but you don’t select it on price. This is a treat that everyone should experience

Homestay owners and their staff were very attentive of your needs and very engaging on talking about the local area. The room was not a std box like most 5 star hotels but instead very individual with something beautifully well designed to see at every turn. This place is amazing! Philip and Kanlaya are such good hosts and the rooms are impeccable. They had great suggestions for things to do in the area (don't miss the Swifts returning to Nam Lod cave in the evening) and even took me to town to experience the festival, some drinks, and local culture. If you're looking to get off the beaten path and can effort to splurge a little bit this place is definitely worth it!

unfortunately we were there during the fires and couldn't enjoy it as much as we would have liked (I wouldn't recommend coming mid February). the vegetation in area in also very dry at this time of year, not the lush greenery we see on the pictures. we hope to come back one day at a better time , because the location must be absolutely gorgeous at the right time of the year (rainy season or right after)

This is going to be a long review, but if you are considering staying here and want a real, local Thai experience, keep reading. This place is NOT touristy and we were among a small handful of foreigners in the area during our stay. We stayed at KE for 3 days and it was one of my favorite destinations of the month long trip to SE Asia. Gail, Phillip, and Pen (Gail’s sister) are wonderfully warm and accommodating people who made our stay so special and unique. Gail (Kanlaya) gave us the most amazing tour of the area over several days. We drank local coffee which was grown nearby, with beans still warm from the day’s roasting, hand ground in front of us and prepared in the local fashion. We expressed interest in exploring caves and Gail took us all over and joined us as we navigated the sometimes treacherous caves. They provided us with local guides for the caves, one which included being chest deep in an underground river! Aside from hanging out with Gail (who I wished was my new best friend) we opted to have dinner at the property for two nights. And OMG, the food was unreal. very authentic northern Thai cuisine, made by Gail and her sister, Pen. The property itself has been carefully designed by the hosts, integrating the local geology and plants into the architecture. Phillip is an absolute thrill to chat with. He’s very knowledgeable on the culture and geology of the area and we enjoyed many lively fireside conversations in the evenings. Our room was decorated and designed with intense attention to detail. Wonderful views. Great birdwatching opportunities. Do not miss this opportunity! I cannot express this enough. Wonderful in every way. Thanks again for hosting us and showing us the magical beauty of Northern Thailand.

My wife and I stayed 5 nights in Jan 2023 as a "slow down" stop while driving the full Mae Hong Son loop. We thoroughly enjoyed it! Really wonderful place, fantastic ambience, great hosts and staff. The room itself (the "Deluxe Double Room with Shower") was comfortable, clean, located in the main area of the property which we enjoyed (lots of patios/terrace areas), and had wonderful views up-valley with mountains on either side. It was a pleasure waking up each morning and finding ourselves in this special place. The hosts provide a lot of helpful information about many available activities (which they can arrange) or for those who want a slower pace (like us) it was easy to find some nice hikes in the area, visit the nearby Nam Lod Cave at dusk to see the swifts (birds) returning to their nests in the cave by the many tens of thousands, sample a few of the village restaurants in between romantic breakfasts and dinners on the patio/terraces of the resort, and of course have some very nice relaxing time in this beautiful property. We especially enjoyed the evening fire in the main patio area with a great view of the stars and enjoyable conversations with the hosts and other guests. Thank you Kanlaya, Philip, and the rest of the staff!

Kanlaya's Resort is a outstanding place, especially for lovers of the beautul Nature. It's a beautiful place, in beautiful Nature with fresh temperatures at Night. The Buildings and the Surroundings are desihnated with the fine Details and in the original Thai Architecture done by the Owners Philip&Gail. If you want ti relax and recover, you will be on the right place. Enjoin the very tasty traditional local Food Dinner along the warm Fireplace. Have a pleasant chat with the Fireplace. Serenity in a beautiful location! Our beautifully appointed room had an amazing view, the food was delicious and Philip was a great host. The day trip to nearby villages that Philip took us on was a fantastic experience too! Plus easy access to the incredible Tham Lod caves....go late in the day to avoid day trippers and see the swifts arrive to roost.
